Slick 60's

What year was my 351w made?
normaly i would look at the sticker on the valve cover of the vin of the car, but this dont apply.

theres no sticker on the valve cover and the motor was a transplant from some huge merc or link. the Intake states its a 351w, and that as much as i know wbout the motor.

were would i look to find the year it was made?

I believe there is a serial number stamped on the bottom of the block. If you can find it, post it - I have an engine book that can decipher the year.

most times c is 60's d is 70's e is 80's and the number is the year so c8xx is 1968 then there are other letters for the variation on the casting.

The casting number is behind the starter on the block. Pull the starter, clean the block off and you'll see it.

And there was a ( 069 ) under it and in smaller lettering.

so if d is 70 and the 2nd one is the year it would make it a 71.
any thing else i could get from this ?

But there is a way to narrow it down more if you don't want to go under the engine hunting production or S/N, Find latest production numbers on critical components such as Cyl heads, Intake manif' etc.

If they agree, for example a D1-- block, D1-- heads, & D1-- intake, etc. you can figure it's a 71 or later. If they are all D2-- it's a 72 & later etc.
If you have a D1 Block & D4 heads & In-Manif, it's a 74 or later & so on.

Or atleast that's how I do it until I have a real confirmation 4-sure.

The first number would be the year, the D would be the 4th month (A=1, B=2, etc.), and the 14 would be the date of the month.
On some larger parts like the block or heads, there may even be a code like this that is stamped (instead of cast) into the part. That code can be deciphered the same way. That would be the day it was machined. Usually the cast and the machine dates are within a few days.
Even though Ford doesn't have "matching numbers", concours judges will look for cast and build dates to authenticate a restoration.

My 460 is a D1VE A2A, usually if a suffix is added (A2A) its a updated recast of the 71 block. My engine was ina 73 Lincoln.

Ther are occasions where I have seen a date stamped on the 385 series front cover.

not sure where to look for the heads.

the water pump is D0O5-D
the alt bracket is D1OE-10A336-AA
the intake is a old style elderbrock street intake
