223 mods

Anyone modified a 223? I've always wanted to make a cool inline 6. Get a 2 bbl manifold and a split exhaust header... I've never had a 223 until now... Is it worth it? Or should I plan on building up one of the 240s I have laying around?

you can get clifford intake and header for 223
not as common as the 240\300 but nothing wrong with 223s

Yea I saw the Clifford stuff. Not sure if that's a waste of money though....

I have Clifford headers on my 223 and a 4bbl intake on it from Offenhauser and both work very well

Wow! Bet that's cool! Does it help performance? Fuel mileage?

How about electronic ignitions? Good idea? Or not any noticeable improvement on a small 6?

I just did a DSII HEI swap on my boys 223. so far better performance much easier starts than with the loadamatic. I went with the 64 oil pump swap, the 300 distributor upgrade, 6cyl GM coil and module.
Hints and ticks has a good write up on a similar swap by bobenhotep:

We also plan on putting the Clifford intake/dual exhaust set up on it

Great! Thanks for the info. Glad to see others into playing with the inline 6. V8 swaps are cool, but costly and fairly common.

I got a buddy with this kit in a 64 w 3 on the tree , and it hauls .... will bounce your head off the back glass at will . lol Very fun ride.

Nice! That's spendy, but unique!

Interesting, it looks like Clifford has revised their intake a bit and added a water jacket underneath.

I procured a bunch of stock rebuild parts for my 223 over the years, including a set of 0.030 over pistons and rings. I've also got a 300 distributor, 64 oil pump, and a Duraspark II module to do the ignition upgrade. The head on mine is from a '59 passenger car, which from what I've read yields a slightly higher compression ratio.

I've known guys to do a similar thing with 240 heads on a 300 six

I'm currently working on a 223, but my previous experience has been with a gm 250. I put a set of dual headers on it and boy did it rap. 12" glass packs and straight out. It wakes the neighbors and has a good old school sound. Only problem with dual headers is you lose your heat riser. Most folks convert ithe riser to water. That's what I did and it works ok but it has to warm up a bit before it's ready to drop in drive. I installed a solenoid to bump up the idle during warm up. Like a fast idle on an a/c car. Works well, but I won't be dualling out my 223. Lesson learned.

Wonder if some sort of electric heat system could be installed.....

Here's a good explanation of why you need heat. Not sure if an electric system would work as it would have to run constantly and would probably present quite a drain on the battery.

Usually while installing dual exhaust manifolds or headers, the production exhaust heat supply to the inlet manifold is eliminated because (with the exception of Edmunds Inlet Manifolds and recently Clifford intake manifolds,) there is no provision or instructions to provide heat. Why? I don’t know and could only guess. In any event heat will be required to achieve good driving response and reasonable fuel economy.

States clifford's new design has addressed the heat problem .

^Indeed. The cast bosses on the new Clifford intake weren't included on their previous designs. I believe they may have offered a water-heated carb spacer in the past but I could be mistaken on that.

Fenton made a cast dual-outlet header for the 223 with a heat riser, along with a corresponding dual-carb intake, but they're extremely rare. The Offenhauser multi-carb intakes have the provision for a heat riser, but I believe it's meant to bolt on to the factory exhaust manifold and is simply blocked off when used with a dual-outlet header.

If one were only interested in sound an option for dual exhaust would be a homespun 4-2 split for the stock exhaust manifold that retained the riser.

You think a machine shop could do the split?
