Anyone have some tips/suggestions or 'lessons learned' regarding cutting holes in a new carpet - specifically for seat mount bolts etc.?

I realize it isn't rocket science or anything but just thought i'd ask in case anyone has some good advice before I dive in......

Thanks

Take a 6 inch long chunk of gas pipe the approximate size of the desired hole, sharpen it to a nice edge on your grinder, then slide a piece of plywood between the carpet and floor, set the pipe where you want a hole to appear and smack the end of the pipe with a hammer. Cheap, easy and efficient.

I added one step to what William described. After getting the hole cut I take a large nail and heat it to red hot with a torch and then go around the hole to burn the edges of the carpet. Helps keep it from pulling apart.

if you heat the end of the pipe before making the hole you get a 2fer

does not need to be real hot either

I use a hot soldering iron.
heat it up, poke it thru, twirl it around and bob's your uncle

Good idea Ice....However I enjoy doing things multiple times and tend to start with the hardest method and move towards the "that was dumb" light bulb moment. Not the brightest bulb in the box but I tend to never give up.

I used a soldering iron when installing my new carpet, it worked great.
