they figure it just like email spam. After all, Spam was around long before the internet, it was just called junk mail. I'm sure it was around long before that, with the romans probably having to kick scrolls out of the way advertising cheap doves to be sacrificed to mars.

They figure if only 1% of the people actually respond to it, they make money. I cant remember what the actual percentage of people purchasing is on email spam, but its in the low single digits. If they werent making money after all, the junk mail/spam would have dried up years ago.

And never, never underestimate the stupidity of the general populace.

I understand what doc is ging threw, i recieve these and those blased emails all the time, its the purks of having a bisness.

The one I got sick of was the little freebee newspapers on the side of the mailbox that I never asked for and never wanted. I refused to take them and they would still stack up until they were laying in the ditch. I found it a little disturbing when I seen my 78 year old neighdor picking up the mess. I called these places and asked them to stop delivering. Didn't work. Finally after a few rounds of battle it hit me I put a sign on my mail box post that said If you deliver it and no one wants it! You must clean it up. I you don't clean it up, the police will be called and littering laws will be enforced!

Sounds crazy but it really has gotten their attention. Most of them won't even deliver to my address anymore.

Too bad it won't work with junk emails.

Anytime I receive unsolicited "Snail Mail" with a return postage paid envelope for my use,
I usually mail 'em something, like a brick, a baggy full of sand, sea shells
or something else that has some weight to it.

I have been known to cut a envelope & paste it on a box or carton like a label.
I wonder often how they deal with that.
For some reason I don't ever hear from them.

But I bet if everybody did that, Junk Mail would really slow down.

I have something like 4 emails.

One is purely spam that I havent checked in over 5 years, that I give to any website that requires a valid email but doesnt require me to reply.

Another is for websites etc that require me to register etc and be able to reply. I check that one once a month or so, it gets a fair bit of spam.

Another is the one I use for my truck and auto etc stuff. I check that one several times a day. I dont think I've gotten a single spam on it yet. (3 or more months using it)

The last one is my personal account. I only give it out to people that I'm close to. Family and very close friends. no websites, no nothing. I very rarely get spam on that one, the only spam I get is because I was silly enough to use it to buy airfare with. (doh!)

I also make it a point to NEVER open any attachments or forwarded email unless I have prior knowledge of them being sent to me. If I have a question of whether its authentic, I just email the person and say "did you email me an attachment?"

Its worked for me for years.

a few months ago i was getting the e-mails from the Nigeriians wanting help with the cashing of a large check.
i decided to reply, demanding the fee which they said i would get 45%, to be 75% in gold.i said i would help but under no circumstances would i take any form of paper, either check or currency.it had to be gold. i then got a reply with an attachment offeriing the supposed documents of the Nigerian that were supposed to prove authenticity.i did not open the attachment but did resend my original reply.
i again got a return message telling me they could find a seller for the gold i desired after completion of the deal.
i was irritated that they wished to cheat me and replied back in no uncertain terms that
i get 75% of total amount in gold
no checks or paper
when you get the gold and are redy to complete the transaction send proof of your possesion of the gold and we could wrap this up.

i got one more reply in which very foul language was used and i was called many unprintable things.apparently i had wasted the Nigerians time .

worst part was i did not get 75% of 25 million in gold.

Still waiting for the box of cash here.

Told them I would just take out what was needed and send the rest back.
Beginning to think they didn't trust me to do that.

there was a really REALLY good website about nigerian scammers that I've since lost.

It basically was a list of stories that the website owner did to screw with the scammers. He'd drag them out on really really long emails, promising them to go along with their wonderful email, and then end up humiliating them somehow. I think he even got one or two to pay for a plane ticket for him over there. Wish I could find the site now.
