Greetings everyone,
Recently had the generator rebuilt for a 62-350 with a 292.l installed it last week, truck started up very easily and ran well.Noticed the warning light was still on,reached down and disconnected the battery.Engine died....
What is next thing in line to check voltage regulator or ignition switch..PO removed the ignition switch tumbler, been using a screw driver to start and stop it.And what's the simplest way to check out the regulator..
Thanks,
Dan

Did you polarize it after you installed it? Its been so long since since ive messed with a generator ive forgotten how,im sure someone will post on how to.

What Lowell said!, and one added comment. Removing a battery cable to check charging is pretty fruitless with a generator, since it likely is not "genning" enough to even fire the points and coil. It can be dangerous due to highly flammable gases emitting from the battery. On alternator equipped vehicles, the nature of an a/c generator can cause a voltage surge damaging the diode trio and/or any electronic parts. I know I'm going to hear "I've always done it that way"! It don't make a da-n to me, but I would assume slicks are a lot more enjoyable with intact eyeballs and an accurately tested electrical system. Again, stepping down from soapbox!

I'd check out/replace the voltage regulator. Using a screwdriver int he ignition switch does not harm the electrics.

X3.

Generators and generator regulators both need to be polarized after being disconnected for any length of time. A shop manual, of a vintage Moror's, Chilton, etc. will have the proper procedures.

The old generator on my 61 Uni would barely put out about
25 amps. The headlights were dim, turn signals were very slow and
everything worked but just barely. Swapped it for a 1 wire alternator
and with a 10 guage wire between it and the positive post on the starter solenoid from the battery, it was like night and day going from the
generator to the alternator. I took the old voltage regulator and chunked
it in the trash. Didn't need it any longer. Headlights, turn signals, tail lights, dash lights, everything worked fabulous. Since then I have used them on everything that came with the old style voltage regulator
and have had no trouble with them. Would never go back. TR

What alternator did you use truckrat? Did you have to fab brackets to mount? Any pics?

Slicksty4, I used a GM one wire that a buddy was building
for me. The ones with the internal voltage regulator. Some folks
scoff at using anything GM on a Ford, but it was available and it
worked. All I did was drill out the pivot bolt area to the ford size
pivot bolt. GM was smaller. And then drill and tap the adjustment
bolt hole to the size hole Ford uses. Also had to use a spacer to line
up the pulleys. All depends what engine you are working with.
Had to fab a bracket on my Y block years ago out of some 1/4''
plate for the pivot bolt. Generator brackets will stick it way out away
from the engine. Don't have any pics of it though, sorry. TR

I've seen brackets on ebay to mount an alternator to a 292. John Mummert makes a very nice cast bracket, http://www.ford-y-block.com/alternatorbrkt.htm

Mummerts is about the nicest I've seen. I have one on my y block. Wasn't hard to set up at all. I did have to use a different size belt than what was recommended and had to grind a little to clear the belt.
