Headed to a car show at Pearsall Texas tomorrow in my 66. First trip of any distance and I think we are both ready! It's about 125 miles one way. This is the first of several shake down runs before the trip to Slick Stock in August. One of the prices for entrants is a flaked roof. This sounds like a neat prize.

Go ahead, point and laugh at me, but I have to ask anyway -- what is a "flaked roof"???

I hope you have good weather, a good trip and a good turn out! Please report back with pictures!

I'm guessing a metal flake painted roof. Low rider and 50s and 60s style. I like metal flake but then again I like bright shiny things. LOL!

Saw a flaked roof on an old Chevy Fleetline that was all chopped and lowered. The car was a satin black but had a silver flaked roof. Not sure I like that idea on that car, but on some it might look good. Have been seeing this show up more and more so wondering if it is a trendy thing.

270 mile round trip with no real problem. Truck got 13.1 miles per gallon-not bad for 352/auto. Twice on the way and once on the way home it would act like someone turned off the key for about one second and then backfire and go back to normal. This was on flat ground running about 65. Any clues? Yes metal flake roof, and no I did not win it.

When I drove to Iowa in 2014
What you described happened to the 62 with the 292
Ran flawlessly , but about every 100 miles it would "cough" ....
Every time it did that... Make a guy kinda nervous

Jeepbut,

Glad you made it to & back from the shindig under your own power.
I'd say that was acceptable fuel mileage too.
Were you able to get any pictures from the event?

Sounds like an electrical short somewhere in the system...... I hate that too. Unfortunately, I have no sure-fire way of tracking the problem down. I guess I would suggest to at least look over all the wiring affecting the engine running. Inspect the wires going to the coil for any being loose, any being rubbed raw on the underside, at the firewall for frayed wires, etc.

Good Luck and keep us posted on your findings!

Lyman, if you still run a points ignition in your 352 keep an extra
set of points and a condenser in the truck. Also a coil.
Had a condenser start breaking down on me one night on the freeway and
made the thing pop and bang something awful. Could be I am wrong,
but it never hurts to be prepared. Just my :2cents: TR

hesitation/cough could be a sticky float needle.

I waited too late and it started raining so no pictures. I have all new tune up stuff that I need to install. Took them with me just in case. The carb was just rebuilt by one of the best-so maybe, but I don't think so.

That's cool.

Sounds like you're already planning on a tune-up. Don't forget to check the timing - and while you're at it, check for timing 'flutter'; see if the timing light indicates any unsteady flutter while reving the engine from an idle to 3500 rpms...an indicator of timing chain or distributor wear.

My sons 223 had a similar issue some time back....I will try and remember what caused it... I do know that the last time it happened the fuel flooded the exhaust and when it re fired it blew his exhaust to pieces.!
I would suggest you check all your grounds, clean them and reattach to bare metal, I even added extra to mine.

Haven't had time to work on the truck, but a friend gave me a solar powered Hula Dancer for the dash, so all is well.

I would look at the needle and seat/float pretty close. Since it happens at steady rate cruise with minimal load, I think the float may be sticking slightly and with a slow steady supply of fuel being used, it tends to get lazy.

Good luck finding the problem and glad you had a good first trip out with it!

I don't know Steve, every time I touch a carb, it has to be thrown away! I need to get my carb guy to check it out.
