Slick 60's

.....I know, I know,,,,to each their own. I'm usually one of the first guys to point that fact out.

But DANG --
WHY do folks STILL have to screw up a beautiful Slick build by putting a chebbie engine & transmission into it????

I was scanning over Mecum's recent sales and spied this nice Slick, a '66 F250, that sold for $16,000, and to read on that it contained a chebbie drivetran????? I just don't get it......... Am I so wrong to think that if the builder would have put the same $$ into a FoMoCo drivetrain that the Slick would have sold for another 2-3K$? I just have to keep telling myself - to each their own. Folks have the right to step in poop or make mistakes....

This is sad but true. While at the F100 Western Nationals approx. 5 years ago, The trophy for best engine went to a 56 Ford with a chevy 350. Now it had all the chrome you can bolt on to it, and was puurrrty but,.. at a Ford show?
Several of us questioned the decision to give this guy the trophy for best engine, our comments were heard and dismissed.
I understand the reasoning for putting in a chevy 350 in a Ford truck, it's easy and cheap!

I agree 100%. In my opinion a true builder, not just someone out to make a buck, stays pure to the brand. I am a Mopar guy I have never hidden that fact. I can't afford to build one though. My second love is for old Fords. I think the 50's Vic's and Crown Vic's are way cool. My dream car build is to build a Ford like John Milner drove in American Graffitti although it would be Y block powered. A 312 with a single 4 and a 4 speed. Maybe Someday

The sad part of all this is that Ford ran Duntoff off because he did not like his ideas. So, Duntoff shoved it in Fords butt with the small block. Very fine engine but I got tired of looking at the bellybutton engine in everything you see. Once I look under a hood at a car show and see one I walk away having lost all interest as the originality of the car/truck went out the window with that one look. Many better ideas out there for something original that isn't Ford. Even so, I like Ford engines in Ford products. However, I will look at a Ford with a different engine, if it is different and original or even rare. Shows that someone may have original ideas and thinks about what he is building. Rat rod, I could care less, but I won't look at it but for a glance.

I recently observed an attitude from a 66 owner at a car show, that had an fe motor, as soon as I told him I was the owner of the Turk. It took awhile listening to a few comments from people looking at my truck being corrected by people in the know, for me to realize they probably did not recognize my y block as a ford. No bling no engine porn on it at all...yet.
I chose to go the route I did because I love the sound of the Y block instead of putting a FE or 5.0 in it. Personal choice
The fact that Chevy powered trucks are going for big bucks is no different than putting a Diesel motor in a slick for the same reason.
If you really love to see old iron on the road it should not matter, more bothersome is old iron just rusting away not being used

I get the same thing at shows. People ask me why I put the Chevy motor in my truck all the time .

Don't get me wrong...... I'm not slamming the guy for installing the chebbie drivetrain. What I was trying to point out was that he would have been able to sell his truck for more $$ if it had a FoMoCo drivetrain. And if I was in the market to buy a Slick, I would pay more for a Slick with a FoMoCo drivetrain than I would pay for a Slick with a chebbie drivetrain.

Everyone has different levels of acceptance. I know and admit that all of my vehicles are not 100% OEM equipped. For instance, in my Slick I have a non-FoMoCo issued battery; some of the suspension parts are MOOG, not FoMoCo; the tires, filters and lubricants are non-FoMoCo issue.

So sure, I'm with the gang that says, HEY, a car guy is a car guy. But like most of us, I too have my favorites...

I'd think there might be more buyers if it had a ford engine. I personally ignore almost any add where the engine is changed. On the other hand, maybe not. Chevie owners pay a lot of money for a lot of vehicles with high production numbers, maybe you attract more of that $ with the 350.

The more I see this the more I want to put a Ford motor in my 37 Chevy p/u,I do have another 235 to drop in but keep on putting it off to wait to see if I can find a donor vehicle with a 302 and C-4 or AOD.

This thread walks some dangerous ground here and I am still sporting some of the tar and feathers it has cost me in the past. Sure, some things bother me, but in the end, hey it's their vehicle. Not some priceless concours classic at all, even the rarest of these trucks is just not that highly valued.

I have had Chebbys in the past, and been happier with them than some of the Fords I have had. I get upset at car shows when I see something that ain't the way I would have done it, but there's also plenty of things on my own truck that are not the way someone else would have done them. My dear departed dad taught me that.

I will continue to have my own opinion, but opinions are like belly buttons, everyone has one. Expressing them in here is just gonna make someone mad or have them storm off, because no one can see if you're just giving someone a good-natured ribbing when they are just reading type. Human nature requires more signals than words to decipher what is the real meaning of what someone is saying.

So take a lesson from me, because I have been down this road more than a few times, and taken my own share of ribbing, good-natured and otherwise from this topic. It always blows up and it always ends up in someone leaving.
