Roof support bracket

Anyone ever take their roof support bracket down to do rust clean up under it? It appears to have a felt style material stapled to the bar between the support and the roof skin.
just three little spot welds holding each side in.

I took mine out a few years ago, just drilled out the welds, cleaned and painted then spot welded back with the mig.

Did you replace that felt material with the old stuff or did you find something new?

April, just a guess, but I would think that felt from the local department store would work. If I understand correctly, it is there to minimize or eliminate vibration of the brace against the roof. I would maybe use contact cement on the replacement felt.

I replaced it with some thick felt that you get at Home Depot in the carpet dept. I used contact glue to keep it in place.

Awesome! Thanks. Will post a followup when I do that part of the job. Currently I'm welding in floor pan.

just my opinion but I would NOT use felt. I would try to find some other similar thing but NON-absorbant to moisture. plastic foam or dynamat-like insulation.

this is not actually felt, it is a commercial type padding generally used for short level-loop type carpets.does not absorb a lot of moisture easily.
i used some on my firewall

I decided I am going to spray the roof with the Lizard Skin when I get all the body work done. I plan on doing the inside cab with the ceramic and also the sound deadening.
I wasn't sure about the felt stuff. I don't want that support just rattling away at the roof or anything I put up there.

Although I do not have the headliner in my truck at present, and the roof will soak you if you get in it in the early morning{it is covered in dew on the inside} I've not had any issues with this "felt". It was just easier to call it felt than what it is, most folks wouldn't know it by what its called
But the Lizard Skin sounds good to me, I have mine sprayed with undercoating..

The stuff stapled to the roof support is more like tar impregnated fiber in my opinion. You will find the same stuff on the underside of the hood on the cross bar that the hinges bolt to. Dynomat may be thicker than what is there but something like that might work well for a replacement. Sweating is a natural occurrence on metal when temps change. Most likely one of the reasons the fiber headliner goes to growing over the years and no longer fits as it should.

April, you can make your own lizard skin, the real stuff is $$$ and it's latex paint with micro beads , google it and you will see. Tom

other option for anti rattle is the foam tape they use when installing a cap on top of the box Sticky one side and smooth on the other. stick it to the brace before re-install and smooth side will allow panels some movement.

Where I spliced the roof, making my extended cab, I placed the extra one under the weld and sprayed it with great stuff. There was an automotive product (forgot name) that was
the same chemicals listed on label but about 3 times the price. Had to get longed hose for the can as you spray with can upside down.
