Remove headlight switch knob?

I need to pull the headlight switch out of my '63.
I know there is a button on the bottom of the switch that must be pressed in order to remove the knob & shaft.

I've tried lots of shaft posistions to try to get it to release but to no avail - except for a sore thumb.

Do you know the "secret" to getting the knob & shaft in the correct position for button to release it?

Thanks for any help on this frustrating situation
Steve

pull the switch out. press down button the same time you pull the HL knob out. the knob should be turned all the way to the left. jiggle it a little when doing this.

Its has always been a snap for me with every one I ever had until this one,,, on this one I can not push in button and pull the knob straight out , I have to pull the knob all the way out, release it, push in the button, then the knob will release. sometimes I have to barely push the knob back in then re-push the button and try again, Its just a matter of finesse!

So I've tried again after reading these suggestions but had no luck.

With the knob all the way in - I can depress the button fully.
When i pull the switch out I can no longer depress the button and I feel it hitting the shaft.

When i have the switch pulled all the way out I still can not depress the button to release whatever I need to to allow the shaft to be removed.
I've rotated the knob all the way to the left and to the right but still don't feel any release.

I've wiggled it and moved it around but no luck.

Am I supposed to feel the button depress (like when the button is all in) when I've found the spot?

Don't count on having the button depressed all the way.
How far out the shaft needs to be to release.
I have had several that were like picking as lock or cracking a safe.

My current one requires being in park light position,
3/4 depression of the button, and release the button just before the knob hits the end of travel.

Saint hood is the key..

Or junk yard trick, order new switch .
Pry the retainer clips open on the switch and disassemble, letting the parts fall where they may, saving only the shaft and lights ring.

I have a few stubborn ones myself, but somehow always managed to get them out. I was to the point of destroying a switch once myself when it finally gave up and came out.
