Wiring fire

Post by Blackwaterforge »

Headlights started flickering on and off.
I replaced headlight switch with new old stock Fomoco switch.
All seemed well.
Started home last night and about a mile from home smoke started boiling out of dash.
Turned the ignition off and got off the road.
Luckily I have a battery disconnect switch mounted in passenger wheelwell.
That switch may have prevented my truck from catching on fire.
I haven’t removed the dash bezel yet but I am sure I have a mess.
Does anyone produce oem wiring for our trucks?
Thank you!

Some wiring is available for some years.

What year is your truck?

Man this sucks. Happened to me way back in 2012 when I was moving. The ghost got let out of a ignition wire.

I’m in the middle of rewiring my truck now and bought a EZ wire kit that has blad fuses in it, if you find a aftermarket harness that you are willing to work with, go for that. I am sure every wire in your truck is as old as grandpa. Take the dash bezel off and look inside the access, it probably looks like a rats nest. I’m using eZ wire. I may have complicated mine Moreno than it needed to be, but it is do-able.

After market system is probably as cheap as an Oem style.
Good luck,
The months may change, but I am always APRIL

Dennis Carpenter was at one time listing different sections of new harness on Ebay, so I might call them.
I know I've seen engine, fuel gauge, alt or generator sections, headlight and taillight harness in their listings
I'm sure Tom has originals in his yard and could give you the pick of the litter if you don't find new.

I recall seeing something on one of the Truck Channels recently about Narragansett being "on a break"?

but did find these

and it seems like this CO may be supplying some other well known vendors, but even though they state they make harnesses for vehicles up to 1969, I found no listings or catalog?

Removed dash panel this evening.
Only one wire was severely burned.
The wire that went from headlight switch to blink marker switch had burned all the insulation off. A few other wires had been burned by this wire but all the wiring harnesses are completely intact. The blink marker switch looked corroded.
I suspect this was the issue that cad causing headlights to blink.
I am going to clean up the wiring this weekend and hopefully be back on the road.
Thank y’all for all your comments

rewired headlight switch yesterday.
Issue looks like it started in blink marker switch.
All wires had some damage.
Are the female locking spade terminals used in the headlight plug still available?

Is the large pink wire in the ignition circuit the resistor wire?
I would like to clean up some unnecessary circuits since diesel conversion.
Can I remove resistor wire?
There is a large yellow wire in main harness that has never been hooked to anything.
Does anyone know what it is for?

Be sure to do the relay mod. The old original headlamps were a maximum of 50 watts, most modern replacements are 55/60. this can overload the switch and integral circuit breaker under the best of conditions. Replacement harnesses are available from many sources, so shop around. There is a vast difference in pricing for what appears to be the same repop harnesses.
The pink wire simply unplugs with a bullet connector near the ignition switch.
