Got to work today and noticed I left a trail of something behind me. Looked under the truck and noticed a nice puddle of oil. Cranked it back up and looked around and oil was gushing out of the oil filter. Removed the oil filter and found this:

Evidently the old oil filter gasket never came off when I put the new filter on. [facepalm]

Quick parking lot fix and all is well. Lost about 2 quarts.

Glad you only lost oil, and not the engine!

I've done it too!!! Lost about 4 quarts of oil in 15 or 20 seconds in the neighbor's Chevette I was changing her oil on, when I was a teenager.

Worked at a service station in the mid 70's. We got a whole batch of filters that did that one time. No big deal the first time around, they went on fine. When they came back for the next change was when the problem showed up. The crimps holding the seals in were incomplete. Left the gasket every time. Those things showed up for a full year depending on how much the driver used their car.
