Disabling your truck

Post by Jerry D »

So, just to throw a new topic out there to start some conversation....

I'm headed to Chicago in my slick tonight to pick up my daughter's boyfriend's scooter to bring it home so she can take her test at the DMV this weekend. I'm sure I don't need to worry about the security of my truck, but I recalled that my Painless harness has a fuse they say is there to be removed to disable your vehicle, should you want to. Anyone ever have a need to do anything like that? If so, what do you do? I'm sure most of us don't live in big cities, but just wondering....

I plumbed a manual cutoff valve in between the gas tank and the fuel pump. It's tucked up and out of sight. I have not used it yet, but since we have moved, when I'm out and about in the new surroundings and higher populations, I will be giving it a quick turn when the truck is unattended.

I had also planned to put a toggle switch under the dash to kill the ignition, but have not done it yet.

If you needed to disable a truck in an emergency
You could pull the rotor out of the dizzy

Swipe the coil wire

Put a "club" between the steering wheel & brake pedal

Let's see, I have a hurst floor shifter, but no clutch peddle...
Between 3 and 4 thousand pounds above my original straight axel and no power steering...
The engine will only run with the choke fully out.

Those reasons alone would drive most lazy opertuneists away.

But a true dyed in the wool diesel guy could drive away with my truck with almost No resistance.
The only thing my key switch actually does is activate the starter... Once running it back feeds power to all nessassary electrical... Throw the key away...

Had a 64 L/B years ago and took the wire for the coil from the ignition switch, and placed it on the low speed terminal of the heater switch (when I need heat I just run it on high)

To start the truck you had to turn the heater to the LOW speed position, then start the truck. Of course when you want to stop the engine, you had to turn the heater off then the ignition switch.

I like the heater trick, never thought of that. I have just been hiding a latching contact under the dash somewhere and running the coil wire through it. I'll look into a switch since I have empty holes in this dash!
