460--> 428...you're on crack!
460--> 428...you're on crack!
Ok so a buddy of mine is convinced that if you put a 390 Crank in a 460 it turns the motor into a 428... is this true??? Also what Manual trannys would work with the 460 block? Im REALLY not familiar with ford engines except for the 302 and mediocre with the 351... so yeah
Reason why I ask, I picked up a 460 for $150 on monday. it's a later 60's early 70's motor. Thinking about throwin it in the f-100 instead of my 396 wince ya'll chewed me out lol (actually I scored a 78 z-28 on monday, from the same guy with the 460, the 396 is going in)

You are correct sir.
Your buddy is on crack.
Or maybe he's just cracked.
I haven't done the math on the bore/ stroke numbers, but the reality of it is, you can't put an FE crankshaft in a 385 series motor....... need I talk about bore spacing, crank journal diameters, and on and on and on........
Well, you get the picture.
They are different freaking engines.
Anyway, I'm completely relieved you're going to put a "proper" motor in your Slick.
There are a lot of guys here that are into the 429/ 460 motors and one of the Texas members (and maybe more than one) are building stroker motors out of them.
Then, as an extra bonus, there is our resident guru, FordBoyPete, who can answer almost any question you have about the 460.
Even in stock form, even with stock parts (which are readily available and relatively inexpensive) they make tons of horse pressure.
Anyway, don't worry, be happy, and again, welcome back from the Dark Side.

Put the 396 in the camaro and the 460 in the truck! 390 and 460 are 2 different families. See Banjos tips on the 460 conversion. As far as transmisions, your gonna have to find a 429/4 speed setup. That was the only performance combo available from the factory. (IE: 71 Torino,Mustang etc). All truck 4 speeds are the ones you probably don't want .(granny gear). Find an FE (352,390,427,428) and you can find toploaders if you realy need to shift!
Oh, your comment about just throwing it in! Does not happen like that.

well its better he is the one convinced than you.
its not going to happen. 390 is an entirely different engine family (FE) than 429/460 (385 series) nothing interchanges.
as to manual trans options i think you have to stick with truck trans, not sure what was availble on cars with 429s

Go easy on him Skip, he is still recovering from the RATfever. It is an extremely dangerous illness which causes severe symptoms such as wanting to cross-breed Fords with Chevys.
Sounds like he is starting the recovery process by wanting to install a 460 4 spd combo. The nerve damage may have been severe due to the misguided notion of installing the FE crank in the 385.
Counselling service is available 24/7 courtesy of the good folks at Slick 60s

ouch... lol maybe just out of spite Ill throw it in now lmao..
Seriously though... ran been looking all night at this crap... TKO-600 with a 460, modified bellhousing, and a 1 inch spacer. Thats just to get the 600 bolted to the 460. NOW with the TKO-600 fit in our trucks and keep the shifter in a relativly stock location?
