351w what would you do?

Post by northern »

As the topic states.

if you had a 351w in your slick and it was time to rebuild it.
what would you do with it?

rules:
1: you must keep the 351w NO Motor swaps...
2: budget set your own budget, but keep it reasonable, not a $10,000 motor, that will not see the road.
3: what will it look like and whats do you think its rated at?

Have fun with your build, comment on others, and wil do this with more motor sizes.

Marc

Edited : just notice "as" had a extra "s" on it....

without a doubt it would be efi, and AOD
Twin turbo kit is only a grand on Evilbay and a computor to run it is only $400

Power (about 500) and economy (22-23 mpg) when the puter is set right

An engine rebuild need not cost 10K but I sure you are aware of that. You can buy rotating assembly kits fairly reasonable. Rebuild your block and buy an upper end matched "kit" from Edelbrock, Ford Racing, etc. You can buy these to reuse your stock heads or theirs depending on the performance level you require. Another good swap would be a pair of reman 85-94 5.0 HO heads from your local machine shop. With these routes your only machine work bill would be to recondition your block, machine work is almost all labor.

get a 408 stroker kit, under a grand. Some decent breathing GT40 heads or better heads, mustang take off headers , a decent cam and Bobs yer uncle. A fire breather for the price of a set of tires.
It's a race.. Will hell freeze over or will JC finish his truck first. Stay tuned..

If you don't want to stroke it I would for simplicity sake get the Edelbrock Performer RPM Heads, Cam, Intake, and Carb setup. I realize that you can make more power with other parts, but this is a proven system designed to work to gether. If you want more, stroke it to a 408 bacuase like the Crazy Canuck said you can pick up a rotating assembly for about a grand.

Ice has it, if I could find a 351 Cleveland a 302 roller wouldn't go in the Uni. Likely cost abit to get it to Nebr from up there. That's if the Canucks didn't snatch it on the way through (can't say I'd blame them).

Cleveland is a bad word to this frugal ford truck owner.
Anyone tells you it's cheaper to do a Chebby than a Windsor is a bold faced liar IMO.
Nothing wrong with a Cleveland, great motor, but HONKIN' BIG DONERO to do ANYTHING with.

Windsor =cheap and that's my middle name.thus:
Windsor=good

I'd be all over those trick flow heads too.
what on Earth Ken needs a road race pan for in a vehicle like this is beyond me but I guess he has his reason. My ideal is a $10 pan courtesy local junk yard.

Wow thanks for all the replys..

I had ment this to be just a normal topic
but if you added the question in the post, and what i have in my truck "351w" you would get what has happened.

this wasnt what i had ment to happen...
I should have done the 302 or a 390, maybe the 460

any who, thanks again...

my motor has already been plained.
John down at the Napa in palmer ( the mech. shop )
will be doing all the milling, honing, porting, polishing, grinding, ect to the block, crank, heads.
Ill be putting it together. " its not my first motor, and it wouldnt be the last "

the motor ran good when i desided to make it part of the project, that and the drop in oil pressure conserns me. cold great psi, when warm 10 psi.
bad cam or main bearings... hence the rebuild.
there was nothing wrong with my old cast iorn heads, yeah they wieght alot, but they can do as good or even better then the performer heads.

run down....

Ive got the new pistions, rods, bearing, oversided valves, springs "and all the other little goodies for the heads".

Oil pan...I havent got the oil pan yet sence in unsure what ill be doing for the front suspension, 04-07 vic ( hard to find a wrecked one here ) or the 87-90 dakota ( also hard to find here )
the old one is a front sump. and it might not work with what i have in mind.
Cam... the cam i have yet to get, but im looking to get eather a 250 or a 290.
Carb... the carb will be a old carter that has been fathful to the truck for a few years.
Intake... the intake will still be the old elderbrock streetmaster.
Dist...im not sure if ill keep the old points dist or go with a msd or duraspark setup, sence ill be rewiring the entire truck with Easy wire 18.

headers... the old headers still work, but are a pain to deal with sence they are long tube headers, making it hard to do the exhaust work or to change out a starter with out having to pull the motor...

as for dress up... havent got that far. ive been to concerned with what works with what and how well it ill do ive not paid much mind to the shiny things...

there are alot of things that i still need to get, but im not pressed on time
and nor is john.
