Ingenuity?!?

Post by GLindley »

This is a listing for a truck on Ebay. According to the listing, "The truck is baby blue with a bench seat and 3-speed transmission set up with two shifters on the floor. 1st gear and reverse are on the left, 2nd gear and 3rd gear are on the right."
Does this sounds like a column-to-floor-shifter mod gone ....uh....funky?
Here's a couple of pics..

it will be ok until the driver forgets one shifter must always be in the neutral position before moving the other .

My dad has shifters like that in his racecar, I hate them. To shift from 1st to 2nd, you have to move the first lever from back to the middle then the second lever from the middle to the forward position. I'm sure it's not that bad on the street, but it kills you on the restarts when you're racing. He was planning on starting in 2nd, but sometimes the leaders are creeping too slow coming to the green and you have to take off in 1st.

This the pattern for the GM three speed in his car.

People on 'Ludes should not work on their trucks. s_crazy5.gif

The friggin' shifter handles look like they came from a bad hatchet-horror movie.
And what the heck is that steering column & wheel from? A '51 Nash? :?

:iagree:
I have always wanted to try this.
Maybe chromed rebar for the shifters though.:rocker:

I have wondered if a small chain connecting the two would pull the left hand shifter out of 1st before the right hand lever reached 2nd. I also wonder if a boomerang shaped swivel was mounted forward and behind the levers so when it is in 3rd and you pulled the left lever back into 1st the swivel would push the right lever out of third( and the same for reverse and 2nd).
:dontknow: I guess i'm just thinking out loud again

Most likely, just like Ice said, a person would just need to remember.

PS Is thinking out loud part of the "Slick sickness"??

Did you notice that the tunel is "custom" ?

Looks like glass. WTH!

if someone has to have a floor shift instead of a column shift(dont get, column shift 3 speeds are cooler), they can get a floor shift conversion at autozone for about 30 bucks...some people are just plain dumb

WELL, I HAD one of those Autozone conversions.... it was MISERABLE. worked fair in theory, but it was ALWAYS getting the gate jammed up. If you did't do it "JUST RIGHT", you would be on the side of the road with a hammer trying to put it right.

I think he likely did this in an attempt to fix "that problem", but introduced a whole new slew of trouble.

I thought the pistol grip handles were kinda cool.... :dancing:
If you were not familiar with this kind of set up, it could be considered a theft deterrent...

I'd like to see the rest of the truck out of curiosity. Skip, looks like your blue on the outside.

It looks nice for a driver...not too sold on that grille, though.
I agree on the shifter being a definite theft deterrent.

Put a M5OD behind it and you'd have a nice truck. I kinda like the blue highlighted beads in the doors. Shame to hack up that nice 62 grill though.

grille looks like hell.
Great ambition, but the speakers look like crap

The Engine mounts are "interesting" to say the least. I dont know about the integrity of the shape of them, but in general, I would say they are quite light duty... The "xmember" looks like it aint doin much.

Never seen an ID plate in the glovebox

Still dont like the shifting setup.

the stripes in the doors look nice. Might think about trying something like that on aggie someday. (maybe)....

That's where they used to place it. I had a spare glove box door, from a 61 I think, with an F250 tag on it.

8+ hours left, could go pretty cheap. Fix the shifter, grill, a few other things, might be a good truck.
