Black Or Red Wheels...

Post by Effie »

So I'm gonna paint my steel wheels and I keep getting different opinions.

Black or Red? The truck is black with a black and red interior [see pics in my intro thread.] I'd like to paint the wheels and pop on some smoothie hubcaps...

I just think the red is gonna stand out too much and try to go for that "rat rod" look. I actually looked at a '65 shortbed that was primer black with red wheels and it looked ok because it wasn't a custom cab with the aluminum trim and had a painted grill.

Then I saw a pic in the gallery of somebody's truck with the plain chrome wheels with smooties. Argh! Decisions decisions.

I rattle canned my steel wheels semi-gloss black and made a big improvement.

I voted red. If they end up looking not right, well the fix is only a can of black paint away.

I swear I had a pic somewhere of a black truck wearing red steelies with moons & trim rings. Looked purty cool, but it beats me where I put it. :?

I voted black. Check out dwbr's truck. Wide steelies painted to match the body with chrome centers and black wall tires are a great look for a Slick.

I thought this looked pretty good. Of course there is red in the trim and on the hood badge, AND there are beauty rings on the rims. Fairly good combo, I thought IMHO.

Guess what I voted! Seriously though, red would look great and the black would likely be cool too. I just personally like a little contrast with the color of steelies.

my truck is red on red. white grill and bumpers so wheels were white. my opinion is that everything needs contrast. had red ones on it once and it was too much for me. Now chrome. but every truck and truck owners taste is different.

haha we are seldom of any real help. I think red would be nice, as it would tie the wheels into the interior paint. Now if it was a Red Truck, Black would look nice.

But seriously, DO IT YOUR WAY, or you won't be happy about it.

(Whoever has that in your sig, im not tryin to rip ya off- and I think you'd have a hard time proving that it's copyrighted) haha

IM doing the old bomber/greaser style with a prostreet twist for my truck. lowering it 4" inches in the rear and 6" up front. Gonna paint the rims red and run the smothies w/ trim rings. Truck is now painted a flat black with white grill and bumpers. Interior will be black with red and white accents (ex- the ask tray, glove box door and guage bezel are all white with the rest being black with red touches to tie everything together.

I dunno, I'm really leaning towards the gloss black.

See like the truck Glindley posted and this truck I looked at a few months back, I like the red. It goes with the whole satin black, rat rod thing. But I think red'll stick out TOO much and take away from the rest of the details on the truck.

I wish this truck had been in better shape, I was ready to buy it but it was a total hack job. Image

redwheels

Post by Truckrat »

old.gif Black trucks look COOL with red wheels. But forget the whitewalls or white letters. Ewwwww!!! I have been running a set of wide red steelies on my 56 for years with only a set of the Ford stainless center caps (innies) and gotten a lot of thumbs up from all ages of folks.
Same look on a Slick would ROCK! Not to mention they are VERY LOW MAINTENANCE!!! I just think if you run black rims on a black truck they need some caps AND rings or they kind of dissappear. TR

what was wrong with it? looks real nice from the pic....
Hell, you would probably call Mrs Agatha a total hack job too, (and probably rightfully so) I think she's pretty good though.... At least what I've un-done of the P.O.'s "work", and improved.

I voted red, but if you're leaning towards black then the wheels should be black.

It's personal. And my personal preference is for modern wheels. Mine had wide slotted mags when I got it. Now it looks like this:
