Rear brakes and backing plate

Post by don luster »

Need some of you help again. Thanks for being there. My 63 slick is getting the disc brakes for the front from speedway. Well now the rear end will need better and wider shoes. I think my 9 inch rear end has the 28 spline axles but not sure. My question is what later backing plates with wider shoes will work. Thanks for all the great help. I also decided to keep the 223 engine for a while since it runs so great and very low mileage. Don

I used a 9" Versailes rearend on my slick years ago. Wouldn't do that again but I do have a great suggestion...
I have done this twice now and love the results. I paid $60 for two complete set ups from the junk yard. We put one set on my father's model A (with 9' Ford) and one on my 89 f150 (8.8 rear). This set up will work on 8.8 rears as well as big tube 9" rears.
'95-'01 (check years with local junk yard for interchangability- '94 may be the same too!) Ford Explorer and Rangers. Ask for backing plate, hoses, rotor, caliper, bracket and all hardware. This set up will also include your parking brake set up. You will need a cable adaptor from Lokar to complete the e-brake hook-up (part #EC-81FC) $32.69 from Summit Racing. Good Luck.

You know, I didn't metion that you will need a master cylinder for 4 wheel discs also. Roughly $39 from NAPA. You can get it from any vehicle as long as you have 1 1/8" bore. I used a 78 T-Bird w/ disc option. You DO NOT have to have power brakes on your truck to make this work.

I believe the need for better brakes on the rear is unfounded, all the rear brakes do is keep the rear end back there as most all the actual braking is done with the fronts. When I put disk brakes on my 62, all I did to the rear was use the hardware kit to make them self adjusting.

I had a 68 parts truck and my slick needed brakes bad so when i did my disc swap on the front, i went to the 68 and later style wider rear drums, since i had the axles and good drums, was a cheap swap! Stops great now, now I have to work on its motivation, because that sux right now!

I don't know if it is possible to have too much braking power. Believe me, with a 545 cu in engine and full pro-street chassis I like to go fast...but it is even a better feeling to be able to stop it. Even with a I-6 or small V-8 under the hood; it is good to stop. Especially if it is a daily driver. Remember, you are competing against rice rockets that way half as much, stop twice as fast, and have a quarter of the stopping distance...and quite possibly are being driven by a young kid who has no financial obligation to care about their car and don't have time to signal because they are ingrossed in a deep conversation about "are you sure Billy really likes me"? It is a cheap insurance policy to convert to discs in the rear. Remember that the future maintainence of your braking system will be cheaper and easier.
That's just my two cents worth...

Yes sir. The 8.8 and the big tube (big bearing) 9" housings (found on 28 and 31 spline set-ups) have the same flange at the end of the tube. Direct bolt-on to the housing.

That's definitely something I didn't know, love this site. :D

Rangers & Exploders have a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern (same as Crown Vics BTW), so the rear rotors would have to be drilled (?) for the larger pattern...or just swap all four corners to the smaller bolt pattern.

Kind of old thread I know but will that rear end work under my 66 stock 9 inch then as well? I plan to convert the whole thing to 5 X4.5bolt pattern so I can run a different wheel (coy wheels).
