Bad day for the slick.

Post by jwh f-100 »

Well once again the I have taken something for granted. I've been told, and I have said I have a 351w. Up until know I have paid attention to other things but his afternoon I pulled out a paper I printed on the small block differences.......... Well from what I can see I have a 302. The bottom thermostat bolt is down behind the water pump. I guess it is not the end of the world but at the same time I feel like a 12 year old who's puppy just got ran over by the mail man. I am going to stick with it. I picked up my new motor mount this morning and one of the MAC guys is helping me out with clutch linkage. Also before learning this the FEDEX guy delivered my new rear. I sure hope that 302 pushes my slick down the road with a 2.75 3rd member. I should be pleased with the mpg though.

Oh there was one other reason I did not have a great "slick day". I have a small oil leak and I wanted to find the source prior to taking things apart but she wouldn't start. No spark, the points are shot. I don't want to "back track" so I guess I'll have to order a pertronix kit and install it before I fix my drive line mess.

I'll stop whining now..LOL Tomorrow will be a better day... Merry Christmas...

bigtrip,
Thanks for the help. After the holiday I'll get some pics and I think I'll pull the starter and get some numbers to post.

It's been a long time, but I thought the 289, 302 and 351W used the same fuel pump? The 351C's and M's are different.

Maybe there is still hope!

Have Fun!

I dont know about there being many problems with them, how about a 64 four door fairlane making 13.50 consistent passes @ 6800 feet elevation on pump gas and street legal? for 9 years we call him 2 ton hence the four door fairlane lol

JWF easiest way to tell diff from 302 and 351 W is the intake is about 4 inches wider on the 351W, just a simple way to tell for future references. I am sure it will do fine

I agree with JC a 302 is just fine, thats whats going back in my 66. I got a good deal on a 302 with auto-overdive from an 88 thunderbird (free). I have built 302's and 351's for our mustang, you can do alot with both.

I also think think the 302 is great, I was just excited about the 351. Still love my truck just the same. Engine photos are in my gallery.

Any one have a good link on the a good pertronix kit???

Never-mind. My local A&A had it in stock. I installed it last night and BAM fired right up. Easy install. Once again the PO screwed me up though. The timing "blade" is gone but I'll worry about that later.

Sorry to hear about the engine. Still the 302 is a great engine. From the pics it looks like a 302 very narrow valley.

With that rear it should be a great highway cruiser. Although I don't think it would be all that good for towing my patrol down here. :)

Or keep your rear and find a nice 5spd.

bob

love my pertronix

I pretty much hate the guy that put mine together. I have done nothing but fix his work since I got it.
