Knee joint ?

Post by Ford4jack »

Anyone here had there knee joints replaced.

Went to the doc yesterday and it looks like I'm down to that or continue with a band aid treatment of pills, patches & shots.

Been using pills for the last couple of years but they make me goofy as a March hare.
Tried cortisone in the wrist joints a few years back and it kicked off diabetes so that's a no go. I know there's a lubricant they can inject but it only lasts for about 3 months and the insurance only allows for treatments twice a year.

Anyhow any success or failure stories about replacements from y'all would be appreciated. I just don't want to go thru it if its not worth it.

The doc had a young intern with him so I suggested that we just cut my legs off at the knee joints sew on some shoes and I would change my name to shorty. The intern had never heard that one before and she just busted out laughing.

That's a good one, Shorty.

My Mom had both her knees done a few years ago. They did them about a year apart from each other. She's really glad she did it & after the initial healing process, her new knees have treated her well.
Nowdays it's still uncomfortable for her to kneel on them, but for walking & getting around in general, they have been fantastic. :)

I think you live close to Jacskon/Mempis area don't you? Is so part of the problem may be the weather there. I live in the middle TN area so the humidity is not as bad. My wife and I traveled to New Mexico last year with our daughter to the international science fair there. My wife has bad knees. She was having problems here before we left and she had no problems there whatsoever. The less humidity and altitude really helped her, when we got back she started hurting again. We may go to Albuquerque when we retire.

they want to replace the cartilage pad in my knee since it's almost gone.. messed up my knee pretty bad and ripped most of it out. It's either the pad or get a knew knee (im 23 by the way). S far i've been doing the shot thing. Im not a fan of pills and about once every couple months I gotta go in and have them stick a needle in there to suck all the fluid out. Not very fun.

I dunno if I were you i'd rather go with the knee replacement. have it hurt for a while during recovery. Go to your physical therapy stuff. Might as well have it done now and hurt for a lil bit, but have it good for most of the rest of the time VS dealing with a bum one for the rest of your life.

Get the knee replacment. Deal with the pain through out rehab. My uncle had both knees replaced. He ended up growing an inch because the old joints had colapsed that much. Best thing he ever did. He was playing golf 6 months later with less pain than before. I will have to have my elbow joint replaced eventually. I shattered my elbow 8 years ago. I am 32. I have 15 screws, a rod and 2 plates holding the whole deal together. I have next to zero cartilage left there and the joint space is pretty much gone too. So far, I have gotten by with staying in shape and living with the pain and taking pain meds. I live in a nice climate by the beach so its rarely cold enough. I do know when the weather changes though. My hand goes to sleep because of nerve damage and I can't through anything.
Cheers,

My dad had it done at 64
He had really good results, Not back to his damn near pro golfer status but he does fine

He had it done in Columbus OH, They started a less invasive procedure down there with a few months shorter recovery time

Thanks for the input y'all and I guess I'm gonna have to get replacements.
Everything I have heard or read comes down to its not perfect but the pain level is a lot better.

There down to bone on bone so it needs to be done just hate to take the time out to do it.
That and I've had some cartilage chips removed before so I have an idea on how its going to be with the pain and therapy.

Time is what started this in a way at 23 I tore up my right knee and did not take the time out of my life to have it fixed. Didn't even take the time to let it heal properly and ended up with the left one injured as well.

Same story in my 40's with a colon operation tried to do to much to quickly and ended up being down for a few months by time it was all over.

I will have to get this one right the first time no projects except my knees this time around.
I'm thinking one knee per winter that should be tolerable hope so anyway.

You know its kind of silly to let things like this go so long if it was a U joint going bad in my truck I would be right on it.

Although U-joints are easier to replace.

Glad I'm a little bit wiser now days or I might give it a try.

Here's a stupid human trick for y'all.
As a young man I had a abscessed tooth and did not have the 40 bucks to get it fixed. I did have a bottle of mescal and a pair of curved pliers though. I got it out for the most part had to have the roots cut out later and had a 2 day hangover.  :nono:

oh man.... not good. some of your accounts gave me the shudders, esp the one about the tooth!

I've heard that fake knees generally only last 20-30 years, especially for guys that work hard. Probably longer for women. They occasionally have to be replaced when a guy got it when he was young.

It was just about the pain & infection that tooth had to go.

I was not in much pain after the mescal treatment and the alcohol must have treated the infection. And no I did not eat the worm

Funny what a person can do if they have to. Think about people in third world country's or the pioneers getting teeth pulled without anything for pain.
