Slick 60's

The C6 was first introduced by Ford in 1966 according to there part # system. But what year was it first offered in pickups. The pickup sales brohures only list "Cruise-O-Matic", well into the 1970's. Does anyone know any specfics?

Ford also referred to C4's and C6's as Cruise-O-Matics...
In '61 automatics were sometimes called Fordomatics...
I believe the first year in trucks was, in fact, '66

Did a little more research and came up with the correct answer...
1965/67 F100/350 w/352 V8's used MX Cruise-O-Matics as original. No C6's till 1968.

Perhaps in colloquial vernacular what you assert is true, but I don't think I remember FoMoCo ever referring to a C-4 or a C-6 as a Cruise-0-Matic. Although C-0-Ms were early dual ranges where Ford-0-Matics & FMX were still single range. Also Ford-0-Matic is closer to FMX than the "C-O-Ms" are.

But fact is neither are much like C series at all. C-3, C-4, C-5, even C-6, are closer to AOD's & AWDs from later 80s & on because that's where the technology was going when C's were introduced in early 60's.

C-3 Started the C series with the Feast or Famine 2 spd Henry put behind early Nodular Cast 144, 170 & 200 I-6 engines of Falcon, earlest Fairlane & Comet notariaty.

Of course I could be wrong , if I am I will find out I s'pose.

1. I looked in my 1966 Hot Rod magazines and the C-4 was referred to as a Cruise-O-Matic in Ford adds and an article on the new Fairlane GTA referred to the C-6 as a Cruise-O-Matic.

2. AODs and its's later replacements the AOD-E and 4R70 are based on the FMX geartrain, not the C-4.
The E4OD/4R100 heavy duty transmission is directly based on a C-6 and some parts can be used to upgrade a C-6.

a cruise-o-matic refers to the shifting pattern of the tranny. they thought then that if you skipped second gear to third then you were saving gas. and if you look at a shifter on a 65 or 66 mustang it should say cruise-0-matic and will have a big dot and a little dot for second and drive. big for three gears and little for two gears. i never knew it til a guy showed me on my own car.

As noted, the name "Cruisomatic" was applied to many different transmissions including the C6. The name was simply a marketing name. The Fordomatic of the late 50's and early 60's was a different trans than the FX, MX, and LX trans which were all called Cruisomatics. The early 50's Fordomatic is what the later FX, MX, and LX evolved from. The C6 came out in some car models in 66 (but not all) and first came in trucks in 68 (hence the fact that the truck tail shaft housing for a C6 has a C8TP casting number). The FMX is simply an improved and updated version of the FX/MX Cruisomatic trans (or COM as it is commonly known) and is completely unrelated to the 2 speed Fordomatic which is actually quite similar to a C4. The C4 and C6 were definitely referred to as Cruisomatics for years. Hawkrod
