No wind today… but it was kinda nippy
Stayed under 70* all day , after getting in the 40s at night
My sister sent me a pic of her wood stove with a fire in it
Because her house got down to 61*
I need to start cutting soybeans
But we had an inch of rain & it needs to dry out a couple more days
After they are cut , plant the ground into wheat
Clean up the machinery & put in the shed
I have several projects I want to do in the shop
But I really need shoulder surgery
Dr said I was due for a replacement 2 years ago ….
I hate the thought of it, but the pain is just too much
Need to finish getting a good supply of firewood stocked up
We don’t heat entirely with wood, but can if we need to
Our little town of Gypsum is having their fall festival, tomorow
I helped cook the pulled pork for the supper
We serve about 400# of meat , and I cook about a 1/3 of it
Might drive the 63 F350 thru the parade
I bought a huge bag of tootsie rolls to throw to the kids

Just about the most perfect day ever
Nice temp , sunny & no wind
I never drove thru the parade
But I did get to see a lot of old friends
Jim helped me prepare the meat… turned out wonderful

Started cutting soybeans Sunday
The yield is fair….
I’ve cut better , and I’ve cut worse
Had a breakdown this afternoon
Just a chain jumped off a sprocket & bent the idler bracket
Got it all straightened & put it in gear .. jumped right off
Figured out the chain is really worn
Will put a new chain on in the morning ….

On a good note … found out I won a raffle
Bought $20 worth of tickets & won $750 for the purchase
Of new tires !
I planned on getting old George new shoes …..
will get er done this winter !

Holy crap did it BLOW today
I’m sitting in the dark
90 mph gust took out the power lines
Took a roof of one of my old sheds
Had a 4.0 earthquake at 4 am this morning
Broke a heat record also .. over 70*
This does not seem like 10 days before Christmas
But I ain’t griping
Got a warm house & people safe
Very sad what Kentucky & surrounding states just went thru

It blew yesterday … not terrible, but too much to rake leaves
I was running the rototiller yesterday
I had to work on the septic tank lateral lines last fall
And the back yard is roughed up
So I started up my old tiller & trying to get it leveled & smooth
And will plant some grass seed
Anyway…. The cheap harbor freight engine was running decent enough
But then it started bogging down & quit
Dam ! …. No oil in the engine :cussing:
Nobody’s fault except the loose nut behind the handle bars :)
It didn’t lock up , so I went into the house & let it cool down
Went back out a 1/2 hour later , filled the crankcase with a 50-50
Mixture of motor oil & diesel fuel , started it up & ran it about 15 seconds
Dumped that out (yes , it looked like metal flake paint)
Filled it again with the same stuff, ran it about 1/2 minute a drained
Looked pretty decent…. Filled it with motor oil & tilled about 2-3 minutes
And drained it again …. Filled with oil & ran it about 20 minutes
And it seems fine …. If it was a cat , it probably lost about 3 lives

We went thru a very dry winter this year
We had a rain last September
Just enough to get a good stand of wheat
….
Then the faucet shut off
No snow hardly at all this winter
I think it turned the ground white maybe twice
But by the next day , it was completely melted and gone

The wheat really got drought stressed this spring
Probably lost half of it potential
But got a few late rains & will make some

But since yesterday the heavens have opened up
3.5” inches so far … and it’s still coming down
As soon as we can get back in the field
It will be hell-bent-for-leather
Have to work ground & plant soybeans
….
I’ve always said I’d take a flood over a drought
Gonna get both this season

Not sure what today will bring
But yesterday it was hot (102*) and windy (gust over 25 mph)
Getting very close to finish cutting wheat
Jim (my son) has ran the combine the entire season
I have been the truck driver ….
The 61 F1000 has probably hauled the most loads
… I prefer it as one full dump of the combine is a nice size load
The 534 has no problem with pulling a hill
And the air brakes are very reliable
It likes its fuel … it could outdrink 4 frat boys at a tiddy bar
But since it’s only 61 years old , it has at least one more
season until it qualifies for social security

No wind today … it was kinda nice
The temp was down , it’s been very hot last few days
I had a company drill a test hole on some land of mine
Hoping to hit water & possibly sell a building site
They went down 20 , 40 , 60 , 80 , 100 foot ….
No luck … no water in this area
The average well round here is about 60’ feet deep
Cost about $1000 for that gamble
I’ve done dumber things …
I did get a good buy on some tires
Kid bought a truck & pulled of some that were on it
31 x 10.5 x 15” … less then 500 miles on them
Mounted on Ford 5x5.5 wheels
Got em for $240 for a set of 4 … I’ll use em on something

As the title says …
WIND BLOWING IN KANSAS
And did it ever today !
Lots of dust in the air
The smell of smoke (probably from a 100 miles away )
We cut soybeans the last couple days
The yields are terrible
Too hot , WAY too dry this summer
We try to get a 35-40 bushel per acre average
That’s non irrigated & some hill ground
We will get about 1/4 that this year
Many guys saying the yields are under 10
I run the older 1460 combine … it’s about 45 years old
Image

Jim (my son) runs the “new machine” 2188
Which is about 25 years old

In that you run older equipment and maintain it well, I expected to see an open seat combine, and not a cab.

It sucks that your yield is poor. That said, it's got to be pretty rewarding to look back and see a harvested field.

Learned on an open cab
most combines went to cab around 1965
I’ve got a pristine 1970 IHC 715 sitting in the back of the shed
Gas engine & swamp cooler
I hate to see it go …
But it’s just taking up space

well, have you gotten all your crops out? I'm the trailmaster for our snowmobile club here in northern Illinois, and we're having a hell of a time getting our trails in. As of this writing, there's still corn in some of the fields, as I'm hearing the grain elevators are full, and the farmers have nowhere to take it if they pick it. I'm hearing some of it has to do with the Mississippi being low, and the barges not being able to get through. Also hearing rail cars are hard to come by and take a while to get. With the warmer weather, the farmers that have picked their beans or corn are finding they're still able to get in their fields and plow, so we're having to wait on that as well.

Yep… all cut
Dismal yields from dry weather
The local elevator usually has to store
Milo & corn on the ground
But not this year

Supposed to be terribly cold in Kansas
Tomorow and Friday … down in the negatives
Colleen and I put wood in the wood box
Not quite full, but enough to run a week in the stove
Suppose to get back up above freezing next Monday coldwithsnow.gif
……….
I was high bidder on an online auction
A local construction company sold out
I purchased 3 “Arrow signs “ ….
The ones you see on road construction
Flashing to the left or right
They have little one cylinder Diesel engines on them
I thought they were kinda interesting
And the price was right
Not sure what I’ll do with them yet

Well… people are idiots
Only had a weeks warning
We were gonna have below zero temps
Phone started ringing at 6:30
“I don’t have any water “
The lucky ones only needed their meters thawed out
The unlucky ones will be paying for a new meter that broke
They hit the meter lids with mowers & air goes thru the openings
Just a simple insulator like a trash bag full of smaller plastic bags
Works really well ….
Drop it down the meter pit
And it seals the cold air from getting to it
I use to love winter .. and still kinda do
Just gotta prepare better

Planted potatoes & onions in the garden
Cleaned out colleens car garage
Today it was cold & windy
So we worked in the shop
Got the 3rd corner finished with brakes
And tire bolted on ...
the bed floor is done
And the floormat & windshield gasket are ordered
