electric fan?
had an old retired mechanic tell me to remove my fan and install an electric fan and that would get me 3-5 more miles per gallon has any1 done this and was there that much of a gain or is it just a waste of time if only trying to get better mileage?
CONCIEVED IN DADS CHEVY BUT WILL DIE IN GPRAMPS FORD
I don't think he's that off his rocker. An electric fan puts no drag on the engine except via the alternator and even then only while the fan is operating. Does a better job of cooling the engine when stuck in traffic too since the e-fan can operate independently of the engine RPMs.
The biggest improvement will be in highway MPG as the e-fan should never come on since the air moving through the radiator at 70mph is more than enough to keep the engine cool.
My Crown Vic's efan does an excellent job keeping the engine cool on the hottest day in traffic with the AC on full blast. However, you can hear the engine rev up to compensate for the increased load on the alternator, and my car has a 200A police package alternator.

I really should get an efan... aggie has bad heat problems when stuck in traffic or even idling at the drive thru at Mc dogcrap last night... she got up to about 200 in about 5 minutes.
a shroud would work wonders for cooling, but the fan is really low to the crossmember, almost no clearance at all for a shroud. but it's all pretty and I hate to get rid of it in favor of a black plastic electric... it's ford red and shiny stainless blades.... I should have never prettied it up when I had the heads off last summer... now I have a MUCH harder time getting rid of it!
