Show season over, bring on hunting season

Post by wyatt »

Well, It's that time of year again. Time to put the truck away and dig out the hunting gear. I will be working on my truck to make a few improvements over the winter season. Thinking about getting it ready for the long drive to Knoxville in May. I haven't cast that in stone yet. I have never been down there since they moved over there from Pigeon Forge.
I have lots of work to do before I make that decision.
Anything I do will be posted as I did when I did my seats and console. Hope to see a couple pics from you guys too. We all like pics.

Ahh yes it is that time of year again. We have our work weekend Saturday and Sunday. I'm thinking maybe Charlie has two or three sika deer stuffed in his freezer by now.

I seem to remember a day for eating turkey and a day of gifts but we all know what is important this time of year. The only bad news for me is after Nov 21st up unitil Jan 5th I have to work a whole 12 days. :P

Actually, Jason, Our 3 day early muzzleloader season just ended. I shot a spike whitetail behind the house here on opening night, then went down my club and shot a nice fat little spike Sika Sat. night. I've had a tough bow season, opening day (sept 15) I had a huge 8 pointer come by 45 mins. after I got in the stand along with 4 other bucks and I missed that sob, then I stuck a doe at dark, it started raining ,looked for 2 1/2 hrs couldnt find it.

That is one of the worst feelings there is. Shoot something and not being able to find it.
I'm going back out this weekend for black powder season. Hope one of us drags one out. My grandson gets to use his rifle this coming saturday. Jrs and seniors can hunt doe with rifles saturday. No, I can't use a rifle saturday Dwight. I'm using a flintlock instead of an inline. Should be interesting.
Hey Charlie, I never had Sika deer steaks.
See you all later

Larry, A Sika deer is actually a miniature elk, found in Md. only on the lower Eastern shore of MD. They were brought here around the turn of the century by a couple of rich dr's. They live in the most nastiest, wetlands and mashes. They're really small but they sure are good to eat, much better than Whitetail.

Thanks for the link charlie,I really thought it was some type of hunters joke. Are there any down around that state park where we had the get together the other year? That sure was a nice park.

No, this is still whitetail country, about a hour south is where their range starts, I wish though.

Larry, I never heard of the sika either until I met Charlie last fall.

Charlie, That is a interesting read. Didn't realize they were actually a mini elk and they were imported.

I only thing I hunt this time of year are slick parts. A good friend of mine just returned from Alaska a month ago and shot a record bullwinkle! He was in Africa last year. I have a slick barn and he is constructing a man cave for all his mounts.

BTW, Still here in the shadows waiting for teh dust to settle on many fronts. FYI 11/5 gas in north east MD was 1.98 this morning!

I shot two. One '65 4x4 in Tamaqua and a '65 F600 or so with a stake body in Wernersville. I sent the pics to Wayne to keep him from committing suicide over the winter.

That's what you meant by shooting, right?

Wow Congrats Charlie!! Any horns? My group did pretty well, one 10pt, three 8pt, one 6pt, one doe, and one coyote. Personally I did not do any shooting  .

The day after christmas is the first day for flintlock. Looking forward to filling my freezer.

Well fellas', No luck here in the York area. I missed a big buck. I didn't wanna butcher anyhow. That takes away from my R&R. sleep.gif
Up where I hunt the deer population has dwindled. There are too many doe being shot. I had 2 doe tags that went unfilled. My son and grandson also had 2. So, that means we saved a few deer for next year.
Next year should be a better year.
Back to the slick in a couple of weeks. After the late season.
That's next to hunting. Then there's my ........

Hey Jason, 2 spike Sika's and a big doe. (they stay a spike for 3 yrs). 1 spike whitail, 1 6 pt. whitetail. I stuck a big whitetail during the rut, I think I pushed it, shoulda waited a couple of hours to look for it. I looked 6 hrs. total for it, bout made me sick. Thats the 1st one I havent been able to find.

Forgot to mention before but it is good to see everyone came out of the wood safe..

It makes me sick also but then I see all the dead deer along the roads and wonder if the one I missed or hit would have been smeared by a car anyway.

Wyatt, That's interesting as our population has seemed to increase..

Good luck with the "smoke poles" guys!!

Here is a few pics... Dad with his 10pt, me with dad's 10pt and just a couple others.. The "snowy" pic is from the second day of bear season.

Nice 10 ptr. He looks like a fairly young deer. Does he have a broken brow tine? Looks like a good gene pool. We have a bunch of retarded looking little bucks around and few hammer's. Sure is pretty up there. Whats that white stuff? I'll have to see if I can post some pics.

One small brow tine on his left, can't remember if it apperared broken. Also one small point up on the right making 10. It is too bad he didn't have nice tall brow tines though. If the Mac meet at the cabin in June works out I'll have to take some folks for a Jeep ride around the farm. The white stuff may still be on the ground.
