Finally got moving on the 65

It has been a slow start on the 65, but I got a dolly made for the bed and I already have one for the cab. The bed is removed and started body work today. I will be including some pictures as we make progress. Think I will be ready for Slick Stock? Anyone taking bets?

I will go all the way with it. I am removing the bed and the cab so I can sand blast the frame and paint it. I had considered leaving the cab on and painting it on the truck, but decided against it because the front cab mounts need some attention. The engine runs great, but leaks at every gasket. I will remove it and replace all the gaskets and freeze plugs and probably the rear seal at the same time. Wiring in the truck is solid and everything works, so it should be no problem. The truck is a low mile truck with tight steering and good mechanicals, so I shouldn't have to do muck there. With a little luck and good weather I should have it to the point that it will be presentable enough to haul up to Iowa on the trailer of my big Slick.

Im at about the same stage you are. Mine is down to frame for sanding and painting. Getting new floorpans put in and some other minor sheet metal work done. Can't wait to see some FRESH paint being sprayed.

I know how you guys like pictures, so rather than be tared and feathered I have decided to post a few pictures.

At some point someone has installed a camper shell on top of the bed, there were a number of holes on the top of the bed side that had to be welded up

The bed was in pretty good shape, but after 45 years of use there were a few nickle and dime dents to deal with, also there was a wad of bondo at the botton right rear. When I cleared it off there was very little damage.

This was an interesting find. I found this parts number sticker on the back side of the accessory rear bumper. I am having both front and rear bumpers rechromed.

Here you can see the beast with the Purple Parts Chaser parked behind.

There is a place in Austin that will straighted and chrome them. The bumper on my big truck was bent when I got it and they straightened it.

I'm getting ready to shoot the bedliner on my bed too. I built a small support with casters for it too.
I'll let you all know how it goes, but the product from Al's Bedliner looks really good.

So what is up with that rear bumper?
I was under the impression that rear bumpers were not available from Ford for Slicks.
I had thought that a buyer only had aftermarket rear bumpers to choose from which were usually purchased & installed by the local dealer???
How can your rear bumper have a C4TZ- FoMoCo part number on it?

You could get an aftermarker bumper or a Ford accessory bumper. I think the aftermarker bumpers were cheaper, and that is probably why you don't see more of them. Here is a picture of the bumper from the other side, you will notice that is has the same contours as the front bumper. The C4 (64) part number would not be out of the question for a truck built in 65. The bumper probably came right out of the parts department of the selling dealer.

Do you know whether or not the Slick FoMoCo 'accessory' rear bumpers were availalble ONLY as a chromed piece or were they also available as a painted bumper?

I am not totally sure about that question. I can only say that during the day I only saw the chromed ones. My dad worked at a Ford dealer and there was a chromed rear truck bumper on display in the parts department as an accessory item.

You could get them painted, or at least I have personally seen a painted one -- I saw it driving around town once. Could of course been someone that painted over a chrome bumper, but judgeing from the rust and the general condition of the rest of the truck, I think not.

Michelle -- what engine is in there? Sixes all leak like sieves. I did a frame up on mine too, but did not mess with the engine, as it was running fine. I regretted that later, as replacing all those seals sure would have been easier with no truck around the engine to deal with....

Got a little more done today. Did some blocking on the tailgate and got the front clip removed. I have never seen a truck with so many bolts to hold the front sheetmetal on. It was a major effort to the everything off. My 56 did not have that many holding things on, and my big Slick didn't have near as many. Of course the big Slick was designed where you could easily remove the front sheetmetal easily so you could gain quick access to the engine.
