Y Block question

Post by 62bigwindow »

I found a '61 F-600 in a local junk yard that has a Y Block in it.Would it be a 292 or is there a different engine for the big trucks?I know Ford had some odd size engines in there big trucks.I am looking to buy but wanted to be sure.

likely its a 292, f600 is a medium duty truck.

the other y is 302/332 they look a bit different and usually in heavy duty trucks.

See of it has the rams horn exhaust manifolds.

If the bolt holes are in a straight line it's probably a 292 style "Y" block. If the center bolt holes are out of line, it's the other style "Y" block.

Already latched on to the grill. The truck is really in decent shape for a Missouri truck but no title and I do not need another project.I have too many now.

Some things to look for on that engine. As noted there were two y-blocks, big truck and smaller truck. Easy to etell difference when you know about the exhaust bolt pattern. There was also a 279 in the other yblock. If the engine has a four barrel carb and the ramhorn exhaust manifolds, then it is most likely the heavy duty 292. This engine should also have the better or more desired crankshaft. Just know that these engines were often replaced in the trucks lifetime, and you never know what you will get. I suggest getting the block numbers and head numbers. You can get all sorts of information on heads and block ID from John Mummertws yblock site. Very informative and he's a good guy. Or, you can just post what you find on here and we can help you ID the items. For sure buy the engine if price is right and it has the ramhorn manifolds and four barrel intake. You don't mention price, but if your not going to buy the engine then let us know how much he wants for it etc. etc.

Have a great day,
Rich

I am going to try to get out there the weekend of the 4th.He wanted $250 for the engine.Seemed a little high to me as I bought two of them for $200 a few months ago.I do not recall seeing ram horns on engine though but it has been a couple of months since I was out there.

Is there usable fenders and running boards under doors with all hardware? I have been looking those for my 61 F-600. Not much offering for those here in Finland.
