2x3 tubing cab mounts for a 64 [6/8 - added some pics]

Post by 64LL »

The outers of the front cab mounts are totally gone on my 64. The inner portions are still there and are resting on the frame. In fact, the floors have been previously patched with plain sheet metal and they never bothered to drill any holes in it for the mounts. My truck is a jalopy so I'm just looking to make it safe & sturdy and like the looks of the mounts that Fanatic made on this page:

viewtopic.php?t=6436&highlight=measure

But I also read that 2x3 tubing plus 1/8 plate is going to be a little shy of the proper mount height, so any tips from someone who did on how you built up the height - just w/ washers or thicker rubber? Also read that tying the mount to the side of the cab corner is pretty key. I'm not a welder so will probably have to find someone to do this for me so just looking for any other guidance. Won't be able to take the cab off the frame, either. Is there an easier way to do this?

On my truck the po built diy cab mounts, and I think they are channel iron with plates, which is about like what you are talking about. I had to shim it up a bit, I think I used home made steel plate washers...

When I built those, I used a set of original mounts to get the thickness correct, but didn't use washers.
Darn----cant remember %^$&-----
Now I have to crawl under the truck and look what I did !!!

I do know that they will last ALOT longer than ME !

I did this,
Reason was to get the cab supported till I could get back in and finish them properly.
You have to also remember that a the cab mount is not the same height on the front & the back side.
I was in a hurry - under a city order to have it mobile in 2 weeks - I was also building a rat rod & didn't care about original appearance.

Thanks, Greg, but the mounts you made look pretty fancy to me! For someone who doesn't weld, I think Fanatic's are probably the way to go - I expect I could get those made up pretty cheaply. I like how the weight is distributed accross that big piece of 1/8 plate. I would just cut out whatever I can outside the frame rails and replace that. I don't expect I'd need to replace or tie into the inner most edges of the mount above the rails.

Your cab mounts absolutely HAVE to tie into the rocker panels.
That provides most of the support for the weight of the cab.
The floor alone can't take the weight - it will buckle as soon as you start driving it.

Yeah, sorry if I was not clear...I was expecting to tie into the rocker panels. I meant there was no need to tie into the skinny end of the mount above and inside the frame rail.

Anybody want to offer some advice to this poor dummy who can't weld and won't be able to take the cab off of the frame? Below is the sad state of my driver side cab mount. Yes, removing the old mount should be pretty easy since someone decided to hold it in place with silicone. And you will probably notice my frame has been clipped. I would like to make this thing a bit safer to be on the road for now and be able to try to tackle some of the easier patching myself later on.

If I'm planning on doing the 2x3 tubing & 1/8 plate mount, can I get by with patching the inner cab piller for now and save the stuff in the step and below the door hinge for later? Also, that dip in the floor is making me a little nervous. My goal is to get this safe and solid where it matters ASAP - being ugly is ok.

Door gap is not looking good. My steering shaft is getting dangerously close to the upper control arm.

id take a welding class and buy a welder, pay a welder to do it, or look for a donor floor. not sure how to go about doing all that without a welder

I was thinking along the lines of pay a welder now to make the mounts and install them for sure. Which means can I get by with just patching cab pillar for now and maybe get a welder and learn myself later to tackle the step and under hinge. Meaning I don't view the stuff inside the cab as a safety issue now....tell me if I am wrong. The floor is actually pretty solid except for right there in the corner where that little hole is.

Yes, the floor and under the door hinge have been done before.
