"Ford F250 Wheel Question"

I Came Across A Set Of 1956' F250 Rims, Will They Work On My 64' F250? They Are 16" 8-Lug. Just Wondering About The Width Of The Older Rims With Newer Tire Sizes. They Are Good Looking Wheels, And Have Nice Looking Hubcaps. Anyone Running These?

I'd think they would work. Can't see why they wouldn't if the old truck is drum and yours is drum

i think if you are going with metric sized tires you will have to find something skinny. like a 215 or so. those wheels you are looking at can't be more than 5.5 or 6 inches wide can they? post some pics. i'd love to see them.

They will probably be 5 to 5.5 in width Les Schwab tires mount LT235 85R16s on my 5.5 16 rims without any problem. When I measured from ground to top of tire it is right at about 30". I had the wheels blasted and powder coated. I am running radials without tubes and no problems encountered. I went with steel valve stems just for saftey.

Yep, I don't know of any tire manufacturer that would recommend putting a 235mm (section width) tire on a 5.5" wide wheel. It can physically be done, but the tire warranty would be void and you could have a lawsuit if you were involved in a crash where it was determined that your tires "rolled off the rim" because they were mounted on rims which did not follow the manufacturer's installation guidelines.

I was looking on Tirerack.com at the Firestone Destination LE, 225/75R16 tire "specs" and it had the 'Rim Width Range" listed as 6.5" - 8". Are these the same tires you just bought? If you are NOT planning to do any heavy hauling or offroading with your Slick, it may not be a big deal. But consider my comments to 'ezernut9mm' above....

I Got The Firestone "Transforce HT" Tires. Same Deal Though 6.0-9.0 On The Rim Size. There Goes My Warranty Out The Bathroom Window Once These Get Mounted On Those Skinny Rims....

transforce are good tires. you should be happy with them. i'll bet they will look good on your rims as well. i doubt you will have any problems just cruising around town with your bikes in the back.

The mastercraft tires I am running equate to a 7.50 16. Tread width is just a little under 7 inches. I checkd the rim width requirements for these tires. It calls for a rim width of 6.5-7 inches. My wheels are 5.5 wide. Im not running any heavy loads and the tires are an E load rating or 10ply not likley that Im going to roll a tire off of the rim. My rim width is off by an 1 inch. Im not going to sweat that. If I was going to use original wheels I would be more concerned about what kind of shape the wheels where or are in than the width of the wheel when the concern is about 1 inch. Over 200 miles on them now and no problems noted. Im not quite sure what you guys are thinking when you say these tires are to wide when 7.50 tires in bias ply were run on these rims all the time. As a matter of fact that is what was on the rims when I got them. I would say though that they were tube type bias ply tires. I guess in the end to each his own when it comes down to tire and wheel choise.

I was only pointing out what the MANUFACTURER required in order to maintain the tire warranty. I know when I plunk down $500+ for a set of tires, I appreciate it when someone points out what I need to do or not do to maintain their warranty. If I, you, 'Shadow' or anyone else chooses to do something to void the warranty, that's fine - just do it "with your eyes wide open" - knowing that you're tossing your warranty. That's all I was trying to say.........

Regarding your 10-ply, LT235 85R16s Les Schwab tires - I have run similar tires on similar rims without any issues as well. The only comment I'd make is - I'd suggest you keep the tire pressures up around 50-60psi. By doing so you will keep their thick sidewalls from flexing too much and getting hot. I have seen 8 and 10-ply tires with good tread develop sidewall cracks that either turn into belt separation or just leaky cracks - all due to the tires being run at too low (25-35psi) of air pressure. Yeah, if your sidewalls start to leak you could then install inner tubes, but tubes aren't cheap anymore either. Lastly, I've heard the old saying, "But I leave the pressures low so I don't have such a rough ride." Personally, I don't notice the difference in the ride from 30psi to 55psi.... besides, it's a truck - not a car. I expect it to ride like a truck.

Thanks Barnie my eyes are open wide. I do keep the air pressure up and dont mind a little harsher ride after all this is on a 4wd and it has leaf springs at all 4 corners. I would think alot of people that are running car tires on these trucks are the ones that should worry alot about what the tire manufacture will warranty especially if they find out car tire was used on a pickup truck. I prefer the radial ride to bias ply. If the truck with bias ply has sat for a while it will have a flat spot that will round out once the truck is run down the road for a while. Makes for a harsher ride for the first mile or two especially in the colder months. Radial tires are usually better for more gas milage and better handling.You also have to know what you are going to be using the truck for as far as my truck is concerned its heavy work days are done. It may haul a few hundred pounds now and then but mostly will be driven empty. If someone was going to still use one of these trucks for work and heavy hauling they would definately want to follow the tire manufacture recomendations pretty much to the tee.

I Talked To A Friend Of Mine Who Was In The Air National Guard And Worked In The Tire Shop On Base. He Told Me That The 1956' F100 5-Lug Wheels Were 5.0 Wide, And That The f250 And Larger Trucks With 8-Lugs Had 7.0 Wide Steel Wheels. Can Any Of You Old-Timers Verify This? Not Much Info Out There On The Web About This. Believe Me I've Looked..............

Notice how nobody produced a concrete answer to your question yet? All guesses. Here is the correct reply. 8 lug 1 piece 16" innie wheel measures 7" accross edge to edge, 6" inside bead to bead.

Great, My Tires Will Fit. I Found Out Just This Morning That These Wheels Are Marked On The Back With The Size. They Are Indeed 16" 6.0 With The "Innie" Style Hubcaps. Great Looking Wheels.......

I read yesterday that Ford 8 lug wheels from '53 to '98 all use 8 on 6.5" bolt pattern
