Doc
Me and Mrs Ice have no children, our dogs and a few cats are our kids.
over the years we have lost many, no matter the reason it dang near kills us.i remember where they came from their names and faces and even for some how they were rescued or saved by us.we have had as many as 40 at once. we lost one recently, Peppy, a border collie mix who traveled here with us. she was 11 years old and had a huge tumor. came here with 10, 5 of those are still with us but getting well up in years for a dog. i hate digging holes when they die and a couple years ago we decided not to adopt any more.
then last winter Ripsnorter came along lost and freezing.we took him in and he is very happy rather than what may have happened had we not.
[albumimg]3509[/albumimg]
then a couple weeks ago a lady my wife knows had to give up her 7 year old dog.older dogs do not adopt well and so we took him in. brings us or keeps us at 25 all of whom we care for more than anyone would think.
who could refuse a face like this?
so here is Mr.Moon all 150 lbs.
[albumimg]3510[/albumimg]
Doc it hurts like hell to lose a long time friend or family member but perhaps you can find it in you to adopt another that might otherwise not find a home.
one of the best we ever had came from the pound ,he was on his last day there so we took him.
sorry for your loss.

To all,
Thank you very much for all the concerns and prayers. She was a good lady and will be sorely missed. Even though this is not the first time I have been left alone ( killed my second wife in a car and horse accident about twenty years ago), and we were accepting of the fact that death was coming( she had been ill for a long time and had recently had quite a downturn), it is still kind of hard to take. Doc knows of what I speak, as he has been subject to the same.
Again, I thank you all for the support and kind words.

first off my apologies to Fred for being tired and not reading all the posts properly the other day. our hearts and prayers are with you .
Doc
been thru the expensive surgery with dogs before, one of ours had a tumor in the roof of her mouth. after spending $1K on surgery the tumor grew back bigger in one month and we had to have her put down.
as long as she continues to eat regular and act normal and her quality of life is ok i would say you can let things go for a while but she cannot talk and you must be alert and ready to know when its time.

Our oldest dog phoebe (staffordshire bull terrier) is 17 this year she we think has dementia, is band from the house as she will now relieve herself inside
, stone deaf, falls over climbing on and off her bed, stands and stares with her head hung down, has lost half her body weight in the last two years and has numerous lumps over her body. Still she can run around like a puppy when she wants to, so we are playing the wait and see approach to see what we need to do next and hope she goes quietly in her sleep

oh. this is what your ominous posts have been about, doc. I never saw this thread before now. I am deeply saddened and sorry for your impending loss. We had to put down our old black lab, OTIS when I was in 6th grade... hell, it's been most of 8 or 9 years ago now.... yeah, 2000. wow. It still hurts. The worst part of the whole rotten ordeal was digging his grave before the deed was done. THAT especially made it feel so much worse. almost criminal. He had gone deaf, partially blind, was falling down, and was incontinent at the end, my folks felt that it was time, but I still strongly disagreed. I'm still not sure if I agree. I think I do, but it still feels so bad.
Right now I am all but bawling my damn eyes out, trying not to let my roommate notice.
My Grandpa died within a week of Otis, making the hurt 10 times worse. the whole month felt like hell. Oh, yeah, he passed away on my cousin's birthday.... THAT really sucked.
and all together I cant imagine how my dad felt thru that period... OK now I really am bawling... I think that was a traumatic time for him... For all of us, obviously, but not the same. you know what I mean...
Fred, I am saddened by your loss as well, equally... I realize that a dog doesn't equal a wife, and yet it appears that I have equated the two. Somehow I find it harder to equate to losing somebody really close, harder to know what to write. I guess it is because I have never lost anybody CLOSE-CLOSE. (IE best friend, parents, sibling, Spouse, etc)... My cousins could equate to it however, as their mom passed away a few years ago (the youngest was about 18 at the time. She recently got married, at 19, ordinarily way too early, but she has been thru SO much in the last few years that she is ages beyond her years, and found a good little aspiring preacher...)
Fact is, good dog, friend, spouse or otherwise, the loss of a loved one is always horrible, and yet part of the natural progression of things. They say after all, there are only three things in life that are certain; Birth, Taxes, and Death.
I imagine that coping with death must be so much worse when living a newly solitary life in a home that was once shared with the other, than when there is other family there to continue to bear and share the grief. I know it has been absolute heartache for my poor old grandma. I go over and listen to her twisted and re-hashed stories of the way it used to be, maybe three times consecutively, and different every time. The stories ALWAYS include the day her horse broke a leg and had to be put down when she was little, and have come to include the day she met my grandpa. And she generally winds up bawling her poor wrinkly eyes out each time.... even when she gets going in a circle like a scratched record... The alzheimer's is becoming worse.
You know, It feels TERRIBLE, every time my mom calls me to ask me to do something or just say hi, if she has even the slightest HINT of something other than pure happiness in her voice, I keep fearing the worst, that something has happened to grandma Peggy, or to her dad, my grandpa Bud. Both seem to be getting along rather hitchingly. They are both doing well enough yet that I hope it will be another 5 years MINIMUM before their time comes, but it is so hard to tell. Grandpa Jim (peggy's husband) had a heart attack after going out shopping (actually he took peggy to the hospital because she thought her heart felt funny, but was ok. He wound up having the heart attack. The doctors said he needed a bypass, but needed his carotid cleared out first. They FXXXed up royally and gave him a massive stroke, died within 2 months. Stuff happens quick I tell ya.
This fear that something has happened I guess is doubled by the way they handled my aunt's death. They didn't want me to be upset by it before I had to be, they didn't tell me about it until 2 days before the funeral, she had been gone for like 2 weeks. Turns out I talked to my mom while she was at Gma peggy's house consoling and trying to make straight of the situation the day she passed. She forced herself to put on an upbeat voice and cover up anything that was going on.
To tell it straight I was pretty much bloody pissed that they didn't tell me, and yet I understood and appreciated what they did. As it was, it still came at a terrible time. The funeral was on the day of one of my Final Exams, I had to reschedule... that sucked.
Anyway, I need to go. Good wishes to all of you.

BA,
Thank you for your note. It is something we all have to deal with sooner or later.I learned about death at a fairly early age, while still in school to. Also I was in the early part of the Viet Nam thing(65-66), and lost some there. I recently took her ashes to the final resting place, and it seems to bring some finality to things.
I am sure Doc will do the right thing when it becomes necessary.
I see you are in Tucson and go to ERU up there. Before I moved to Globe in 1989, I lived there. Over the years I had several different Aircraft, 2 Cherokee's, a Grumman, A Ercoupe, A Bonanza, And 4 different Homebuilt types. I used to fly in and out of Love Field during the time when it was an uncontrolled field. Good luck with your studies and vocation.

Doc, you are not free but your dog is free from suffering.
been thru it lots of times because we have lots of dogs and had lots more at one point in time.
moved up here with 10, fun travel.
6 of those are still here ,the oldest is 14, the next oldest is 13 and has a tumor now. she is still active but by the next winter she may not be. we will see how things go.
we had 40 at one time , 24 now. i have dug lots of holes and watered them by eye while working.
it never gets any easier, and the older they get the harder it is.
leave the dog door, you may change your mind.

I explained this forum to my girlfriend last night and she started crying. We are both animal lovers and adopt only. My dogs are somewhat young but even right now Iam not looking forward to when this does happen. It kills me to even think about it but the thing is, its going to happen. Not all dogs get a lucky home like Iam sure everyone here has gievn thier pets. Thing is you treated her great and she treated you great. To me thats one hell of a good life so dont close the door on that. Im not saying now but there are SO many loving dogs out there that just need a good home and from the way you talk about her its obvious that your a great dog owner. Keep that going becasue what goes around comes around. Pets keep you young, teaches patience, and most of all shows love no matter who you are. I personally couldnt think of anything better. It sucks right now but Iam sure there is a dog out there that wants to give you what your missing. I now think that I didnt save my dogs, but they saved me. Keep your head and dont give up.
Girls love a pick-up man.
Doc,
I know how you feel, I had to do the same with a dog of mine a while back that I had had for 16 years since I was a baby.
I cant imagine how I would feel now. I've got two more, "the boys", and these two got me thru some REAL rough times over the last couple years. It was nice to be able to a couple of buddies that were glad I was home, made my house seem not so empty anymore not to mention them putting up with my shit and and dealing with me walking around the house ranting and raving like a lunatic screamin and yelling my head off. They just sit and look at me as if they are listening to me then inevitabilty one of them would do something goofy and I could help but laugh...then I would "attacked" and at the end of it I would find myself it much better shape.
All in the end remeber you are doing the right thing. How would you like to be in your last few years of life just to have the same thing happen to you...only some one couldn't say "don't let him suffer".

Doc and Fred, once again my heart goes out to the both of you. Like Whitey Ford i was telling my girl friend these two stories and had to stop before i could finish, kinda hard to talk with a big lump in your throat. Got choaked up tonight just reading the last few post. Doc i agree with ICEMAN, leave the doggy door up for a little you might change your mind. Fred i dont know if you have a pet or not, but one might help if you dont. I have said many times " No more dogs, that was the last one" but i guess i lie a lot.

I am sorry to hear this Doc.
Reading this choked me up (again) and not much does anymore. I have been where you are now so I understand. You did do the right thing for her. Just don't forget all the good she brought you too, that'll be easier soon. It will get a little better - sort of.
I once asked a girl at the Humane Society how she could stand to do it, she said;
"You have to love them enough".

Doc,
Glad to hear. We all need a reason, and it sounds like you found one. I wish you all the luck with her.
Even though I am pushing 70 now, I took a job, part time-on call to fill in some time. So far, it is OK. All I do is shuttle vehicles around the state for Enterprise RentACar. Doesn't take much brain or brawn, but does occupy time. I was in Tucson twice last week, but it was during your working hours.
