Can a 9 inch positrac carrier be ID'ed by the tag or any other way without pulling the whole diff apart.
Yes to both questions.
1. With the truck in neutral, jack up the rear of the truck (both wheels) and turn one wheel. The other wheel will turn in the same direction if you have a posi. An open rear wheel will turn backwards or not move at all from the direction you rotate the wheel. This is the best way.
2. Look at the tag. The bottom set of numbers will read something like this: 3 70 3CD 303. The first 3 numbers, the 3 and the 70 are the ratio of the rear end 3:70. If there is an L in the sequence, its a "locked" or posi unit. If not, its an open.
