302

Post by don luster »

Hey gang Can someone tell me what years 302 v8 were made with carbs. Are there 302 that could be c onverted to a carb? Is there a 302 that will permit a 5 speed od trans to be b oldted up the the engine? Thanks for your time and effort to answer my questions. Saw a 347 ci pull 514 Hp with vic edelbrock pulling the throttle. Got me to thinking more than norman.

1985 was the last year for carbs on the 302/5.0, though some applications were equipped with central fuel injection (aka throttle body injection) starting in 1980. The switch to sequential fuel injection occured in 1986.

However, any 302/5.0 can be converted to use a carb, and a T-5 manual transmission (5 speed overdrive) will bolt right up. The later 5.0 was equipped with a roller cam which makes them a good choice.

Difficulties may arise if you want to run a later 5.0 with the earlier v-belt drive, because you need to find a complete matching set of front pulleys. There were several changes throughout the years that make the front accessory drive a challenge in terms of interchangeability. Some water pumps were reverse rotation, for example.

:iagree:
What I did was move everything from the front of the engine in my 86 Bronco 302 to the repacement engine out of a 91 Thunderbird 5.0 HO then I converted to a carb. It's been doing very well.

Thanks for your comebacks. I will file this away incase I want to remove the 223 6th cyl engine one of these days. 514 hp out of 347 is almost unreal. Tooo much engine for an everday driver but could be fun in a lesser hp condition.

Putting over 500HP out of a SBF requires a lot of inernal strenghtening, and is not cheap. I have heard many different stories on the 347ci motors, including the potential for a short life due to the wrist pins, and piston rings being so close etc. But a t 514HP 347 would be a great race motor.

With a lot less cost, a nice roller 302 with a good cam and a little head work (or aftermarket heads) will crank out an easy 300+, is plenty for most trucks. If you're looking to build monster HP, you may want to go a different route... FE etc.

That's definitely true of the roller blocks, which are a thin-wall casting that can split from the lifter valley to the mains when the horsepower starts to climb above 500. It becomes a real risk when nitrous or boost are involved, especially when the engine is improperly tuned. Any build intended for 500+ should really start with an aftermarket block, or a 351 which is already stronger in OEM form by virtue of its taller deck.

The 331 stroker kits offer a better wristpin location, but I believe there's also a 347 combination that uses the same piston as the 331. They can be built to put out decent hp numbers while still being reliable but obviously it won't be as reliable as the OEM setup. Which is rock solid, imo.

That being said, I agree that 300+ is easily achievable with a stock crank.
