gas tank behind seat smell?

Post by thenephilm »

For the guys who actually keep the gas tank behind the seat, does it actually smell like gas in the truck? I'm not a huge fan of it but with my project I don't really want to have anything in the bed, such as air tank, and I may have to do that if I move the gas tank. I realize a lot of people move it for safety reasons but I will not be driving the truck all the time. Do you like having it behind the seat or would you move it if you had the choice?

The only time I smelled gas in the cab was immediately after a fill up.

I would move it if I had the choice, in fact, I did move it under the bed, but it was not for safety so much as better weight distribution. I really don't think it's much safer where I now have it. Some of the guys here have come up with excellent solutions for mounting a tank in the rear. An added benefit is that it frees up the space behind the seat for other stuff.

Doesn't it allow you to slide the seat back farther too? I know its a little tight in there to begin with lol, although I will be installing a tilt column

Back in the mid 70s when I first bought my 64 the rubber hose from the filler cap tube to the tank was dry and cracked. Like Charlie said smelled gas at every fillup. A new hose worked wonders,.

Same with mine. It only smells of gas when I fill it. I should probably replace the hose. Its the original one that came with the truck. The seat fits ok, too.

i don't think you can slide the seat back any farther because it's the back of the top of the seat hitting below the window and not the lower portion that determines how far back you can go. unless you want to sit straight up and down.

never had any issues with the tank.

make sure the cap, grommet and hose are in good shape.
same goes for the gasket on the float arm hole in the top.

never park with the drivers side lower than the passenger with a full tank.

Most of the petrol smell comes in the door or window as you fill the tank!, your fillers are next to the drivers door!, that`s why we moved the drivers door too the other side!

Mine smelled like I had an open container of gas in it. I changed out the hose, with new clamps, and now, even with a fill up, no smell at all. Cant thank everyone here that suggested the new hose.

Gas smell can be pinhole in thtanke rotted thru somewhere. Also, it's a good idea to not tot5ally top of the tank, and make sure you have a good gas cap. Some of th older caps did not have a good neoprene seal and the leaked when parked on hills the drivers door downhill. There is also a rubber gas line under the cab , directly below the drivers seat that need inspection for cracks.

make sure you have the correct sender screws with the rubber O ring type seals under the head of each screw, that with new sender gasket snd filler hose should put an end to the smell Bill

Here is something I found out today while crawling under my truck.

If you decide to remove the gas tank out from behind the seat and remove the brackets at the bottom of the cab, don't forget to install the bolts again. They are the rear cab mounting bolts. DOH!

*note to self, install rear cab bolts tomorrow

exception: unis, bolts only hold the brackets down, there are no rear cab mounts.
