Slick 60's

Anyone know the original color for the 1964 262 engine? Considering priming and painting soon and want to make sure I have the right color.

Either Red or Black, someone will know. Personally, I'd paint it blue

I've considered blue but want it to be original. If nobody knows it might be blue by default.

Trucks: Black engine and air cleaner, Ford Red valve covers. 61-64 223's, 262's and Y-Blocks.
Cars were different. Blue came later.

Most people see a red or black engine in an old Ford and think the owner didn't know it was supposed to be blue.

Black engine, you'll never find the oil leak. But then again, you won't see the oil either.

Until that leak hits the garage floor

my 64 262 6 is a black block with a silver valve cover that i believe t.o be original.i would be curious if this is right.

But whatever color looks good to you is what you should paint it.

Personally, I've been thinking I'm going to paint my next engine a Ford Ferguson GRAY. I think it would look different and kinda give it an muscular, 'industrial' look.....

Of course, anyone can paint their engine (or truck for that matter) ANY color they want to.

BUT, the OP (Duke) asked about the "original" color and member 1964 262 6 asked if silver valve covers were "right" by which I assume he meant "correct or original".

I've done a good deal of research on the subject and as far as I have been able to determine, black blocks/accessories and Ford Red valve covers were the "original from the factory" colors for the 61-64 Ford trucks.

aren't all the 90s truck engines gray? I like gray on an engine, that's the color of choice in the navy. gray and black or red would look good IMO.

I appreciate all the help and opinions, and I agree that its the individual who owns the trucks choice on what to do. At first I really wanted blue. But I have a real thing for original so I'm going with the red and black attack. Not sure if its wise to paint an engine while its snowing outside, so pics might have to wait until spring. But thanks again everybody for the help.

On the subject of painting, I've got some purple power degreaser I'm going to use to clean it up with. I was going to start with the valve cover and the oil pan since they are already off the engine. This purple power stuff has good ratings, but I have a question. Do you mix it with water? It doesn't say on the bottle. Is it use cleaner alone then rinse, or mix with water then rinse? Or does it matter as long as your wearing gloves?

Yes, the '64 262 engine had a black block with a silver valve cover and the new for '64 330, 361 and 391's were painted this way also.

Any pics of this?

I'll back up Factory Stock on this one. My 262 has never been repainted and it has a black block and silver valve cover.
