Slick 60's

How big of a difference between is there between a 60 and 64 tie rod tube?

I am assuming it is only in length?

The parts stores show a tube that goes from 57 to 60 and tie rod ends that go from 57 to 64, but nothing in the 64 range, as usuall.

Can you fix yours? And there are enough people here swapping these straight axle front ends over to CV, ID or Mustang 11 that a few extra tie rod tubes should be available. Or you could order a new one for the 60 and see if it fits. If not take it back. Gotta be a way to resolve this. IMHO!

if the ends are the same and i know the drums and other front end parts (bearings,seals) are the same so not sure why the tube would be different?

I tried to adjust it and they are frozen, even tried taking it off the truck and put it in a vise.
I am just worried that if I start heating it or get too crazy, it will damage it. This is my daily driver, so that would not be good.

If there turns out to be a major difference for the new ones that are available, I may need to put out a feeler for a good used one.

This is what I was thinking too, but I called an online parts store and they said there was a difference, but he couldn't tell me what.

I would assume it is the length, as the rod ends are the same.

i recently had to adjust the tie rods on my 66 due to installing new springs.
kind of a pita,went as follows:

remove clamps, wedge slot/ spray with pb/heat/spray with pb/heat/spray then turn with pipe wrench.
after it finally loosened up it moved good,

if you take both tie rods and the tube off the truck then you might as well remove the rod ends completely and coat with anti-seize

My books says that 57-60 tube is 47.87" long and 61-64 is 48.10" long.

Man, thats less than a 1/4 inch.

That has to be close enough to be able to make up with the threaded tie rod ends.

if thats the case then there really should not be an issue as theres still plenty of threads in the tube.
the difference of 1/8 less per side is 2-3 threads. (not sure if the rod ends are 5/8 or 3/4)

You can get custom length of tube from Speedway Motors in 11/16" thread.

You can slot their tubes and use the Ford style clamp to pinch the tie rod end tight if you don't want to use jamb nuts. Just use a die grinder and cut a slot similar to the one in your stock tie rod.

I would try using the 57-60 piece. Both use the same 11/16" tie rod end.

Just an FYI/update, the 57 to 60 tube will work on the 64 tie rod ends.
