351/400 Differences from a 302

Post by Kid »

I am looking at a 78 F-150 with a blown engine. It is a 4x4 and it has a 351 or a 400 ( I can't remember which) and I have a good 302 in my garage. I think the engine s will interchange at the bell but I am wondering how much other stuff will swap right over. The engine I have needs the accessories like power steering and Alt Brackets, Dizzy, and other small stuff. Will the mounts match up or will I need to find another set of motor mounts. I can buy this truck dirt cheap and it is in pretty good shape just not sure I want to put much money into it. If I can buy it and use what I have here to get it running and not spend much money I will do it, I am cheap...........Kid

Practically nothing interchanges plus the 351M/400 has the big block 460 bellhousing pattern not the small block pattern. Motor mounts are different too.

It depends on what year the 302 is. 1970 and newer will interchange pretty easily. You will need a new bellhousing so if it is a C6 you will need a new trans but if it is a stick you are on your way. The engine accessorie brackets and pullies will all fit just fine but there are small brackets on the heads of the 302 that are different than the 351M/400 (which is how they make all the same brackets and pullies work). Also engine mounts are different. Hawkrod

Ok, now I am really confused. i always thought the 351/400 was the same block as the 302. When we built Lances Uni we took a LTD that had a 351 in it and bolted a 300 up to the trans with no problem. He did research on the vin to make sure it was a 351 and that is what he came up with, I still have that engine so what can I look at on it to make sure what it was. I do have access to another 351 but wanted to use the 302 I have setting here..............Kid

The 351 Windsor is more like the 302, but still not the same block. The 351Cleveland has the small block bellhousing pattern, but otherwise is a different engine. The 351M and 400M are like the Cleveland block, but with the big block bellhousing pattern.

351W is almost the same as a 302 just a taller deck height. Same bellhousing & motormounts.

Kid it's like this and there ARE (like in all things Ford) exceptions

same motor mounts
302
351W
351C
351M
400M

same bell housing (small block)
240 six
300 six
302w
351w
351C

same bell housing (big block)
351M
400M
429
460

so don't even confuse yourself with the other 400 or the FE's or other things right now. There's what you need to know.

O BOY, I guess as long as the engine will bolt to the trans is all that is important. I can fab whatever engine mounts I need and get he rest of the stuff from a yard. Man this crap confuses me............Kid

the '78 if it was a 351 or 400 would have had a M motor originally, which would be a big block tranny pattern. If you want something to bolt up to it, you could look for another modified motor (there are lots of those kicking around that people don't want) or a 429 or a 460,but with them you will have to change out those motor mounts.

if you want to use the 302 you have, you can use the motor mounts in the 78, you will probably have to get different bracket accessories either way, AND you will have to change out the tranny.

I do not think the 302/351W/351c use the same motor mounts as a 351M/400. The 302 style bolt to the block with two bolts going straight up and the 351M style bolt flat to the side of the block at a 45 degree angle. Hawkrod
