1978 1979 tilt steering column swap

Post by bluebolt »

I picked up three 1978 1979 tilt steering columns today, 2 out of F150's and 1 out of a van for parts. Both F150 columns have issues, 1 had a bad upper collar due to an idiot prying off the custom steering wheel and the other had the adapter flange missing to go to the rag joint. The van one has both parts I need. All are automatic columns so I will have to see if I can figure out a way to remove it cleanly to use with my floor shift four speed.

Had I thought about it I could have shown you the 79 column in my 56 when you were here.

i put a 79 tilt in my 65. i just bought a generic replacement rag joint kit, then drilled out the rivets/removed the bolts. used the half of the coupler from the 72 power steering box and the half that was attached to the 79 column with the new rag joint. it works great, but the column is a little long and the steering wheel is too close to you when you are driving. also there is a thread in the tech section to give you the wiring connections for installing the 79 column to your slick.
