Replacement for Quasimodo

Post by macgiobuin »

After the sad passing of their bell ringer, the Bishop decided to advertise for a replacement. Several applicants came to the church to apply. The last person to arrive was a man with no arms. The Bishop said he didn't see how this man could fill the position, but the armless man insisted on showing the Bishop he could do it. The Bishop finally agreed, so they walked up several flights of stairs to the belfry. Once there the man with no arms proceeded to play songs on the bells by hitting his face up against them. At first, the Bishop was horrified, but the man played with such skill that the bells sounded more beautiful than the Bishop could ever recall hearing. After two songs, the Bishop hired the man on the spot. The armless man was so excited that he started hopping around, but unfortunately lost his footing and fell out of the bell tower window, falling 4 stories down to his death. The Bishop ran down the stairs and into the street where a large crowd had gathered to listen to the beautiful music the dead man had been playing. One of the onlookers asked who he was. The Bishop replied, "I don't know his name but his face rings a bell."

Later that week, the Bishop was walking to work one morning when a man ran up to him and said "You have to hire me to be the bell ringer. The armless man who died earlier this week was my brother. I want to honor him by doing my best to ring the bells as beautifully as he could. The Bishop was very moved by the man's heartfelt request and agreed to hire him. This man got so excited about his new job that he had a massive heart attack right there and died at the Bishop's feet. Hearing the commotion, several people ran to where the Bishop was standing and asked who this man was. The Bishop replied, "I don't know, but he's a dead ringer for his brother."
