If nobody - literally NOBODY responded to spammers they would not even post a second time.
They are much like a spoiled child acting out. If they don't get any validation for the bad behavior then there is no reason to continue it. They will post once on tons of forums and make their settings for notification. If somebody replies they get an email and come right back. They hit so many sites that if they don't get notifications they will likely forget they were even here.
