Post by Alan Mclennan »

I been procrastinating for about 3 years now on, painting the radiator support panel black! and doing some black shadings to the grille!, can you post a pic of what you've done to the grille for some ideas. this is what I`m starting with!

Alan,
Here is a picture of my son's '66. We made an effort to try to keep a somewhat stock appearance.

[albumimg]6087[/albumimg]

The core support is painted semi-flat black and the grille is a NOS unit. The grille has factory black paint (appears semi-flat) around the top, outside and bottom of the headlight doors. Also the vertical grill bars between the top and next to top horizontal members and the bottom and next to the bottom horizontal members are all painted black.
Looking at the grill it gives the impression the grille and headlight doors are floating, surrounded by a bright trim ring\

I was surprised to see that even FORD is reversed "down under" Part of the export package?

I dunno Alan...I like the yellow behind the brightwork. Looks clean & classy the way it is, IMHO. I'd keep procrastinating

Roger, that pic is perfect! and so is the truck!
the lettering was changed to take a pic of it and post in an old topic, where JC and some other cohorts were giving me a hard time about the steering wheel being the wrong way around! :P , I have put it back since tho!

Your right Alan, it doesn't look right. The design of the grill is altered when it is all chrome and doesn't float agianst the radiator supports. There is reason why Ford did it ( to balance front end), and a reason whey repaint shops don't (to save money get it in and out quick). Also, the small sections behind each chrome letter is blacked out. While your at it, some argent paint on the lower gravel shield between grill and bumper will complete the look.

Nice looking DORF Alan. FWIW: I prefer the black background.

Alan, IMO your DROF looks great.. BUT when looking at your photo, your grill looks better infront of the black radiator..

On my truck I like the body color inside fenders but I wish I had painted the core support black.

BTW, I bet it looks great from the drivers seat.. get in and drive.. :D

Must be smart-azz Canadian humour. I was thinking the same thing. Seriously Alan, your shiny grill will jump out 100x more with a black support. I think it will look good. Keep the gravel pan body color though. It looks better that way IMHO

Our '66 originally had the argenr (silver) gravel shield. Had the painter paint a spare gravel shield, so we had one body color and one silver. Put them both in place. My son, as well as all that looked at the truck, preferred the body color to the silver. Hence the body color shield.

The grill will stand out better with a darker core support. If the truck was a maroon, dark blue or black I would be inclined to paint the support the body color. I think a yellow truck would look better with a black support.

Alan, thanks for the kind words. Your rig looks like it would hold it's own in any show and shine too.

Bright Grill, portions painted to match body color, Black core support. This is one reason I had to have a 62 grill. I also had a 62 grill for my old 66 shorty that was going to be done the same way - this paint job was originally going on the 66 with the longest points at the top instead.
I came up with this like 5 - 6 years ago.

I painted my support black and grill as original to give it the 'floating affect'I did go around the bezels on the inwards part which I should not have. Steve
