Insulating starter
Do any of you have problems with the "hot starter" problem when running headers on a FE (352, 360, 390, whatever)? Since the headers run so close to the starter, I'm concerned. They are the typical plain black painted. Can I just insulate the starter? Any ideas if a problem? Thanks, I have never run headers in a slick long enough to experience any problems. I just don't want to get the "cool factor" shot down the first time I have the truck out.

I just put a set of these headers on my 352. I bought a roll of that header wrap, it is woven fabric strips about 1 1/2 inch wide. If I have a problem, I plan on wrapping that part of the header. These starters are pretty reliable, and might be OK with the heat. I think it is the X brand that has the problem.

I insulated the starter on my 56 F100. It did not want to start when it got hot. I used some insulation from the hot section of a jet engine that I had from my A/F days. I cut a secton of the insulation and wraped it around the header and held it in place with stainless steel safety wire. It works great. That stuff is probably out lawed now, it has heavy foil for an outside layer with asbestos in between the layers for heat absorption.

I was going through starters on my 300 with headers untill I added a heat shield. It was made my DEI and was like this one. Never had a problem with it.

I know you asked specifically about an FE motor, but I used the header tape (high-temp cloth, might be asbestos???) on the tri-Y headers I have on the 289 in my 65 Mustang. The tape has been on there for at least 20 years, and I have never had an issue with my starter.
