Best 4BBL carb

Post by Weedhopper »

If you bought a brand new 4bbl carb for a 352 or 360, Eldebrock performer package and headers, what would you get? I currently have a 600 Holley 4160 vacuum secondary on the 390 in my 66 F250, and love it. I want more performance for the 360. What do you guys run?

Keep the Holley.
Experiment with jets and accelerator pumps. The 600 is a great carburetor for a medium performance 390.

This is like asking which oil is best. Me, I don't at all care for Holleys.

Also, it sounds like you are trying to gain more performance simply through bolting things on the outside of the engine. If you don't address the camshaft and compression, timing, etc etc you're never going to get the best results.

which carb is best?

I run a Holley 600 on my new 390/402. I agree with all the above opinions. Holleys aren't perfect, but are really tunable to your specific engine. Plus, parts/upgrades are plentiful. If it's a pretty stock engine, stick with a 600. Agreed. Bigger is not always better. Years ago, I ran a mild 289 in a '71 Comet GT. After running a 600, for giggles I put on a little 450 Holley. To my surprise, throttle response and power was better up to about 4500 rpm, and better on gas. Since it was a mild street engine, it was the better choice. Just my nickels worth--with 3 cents change.

running a pair of edelbrocks / carters 550 cfm each, these carbs are just more streetable and much easier to adjust than a holley . no removing bowls or taking them off the intake, complete metering rod kits for all sizes are inexpensive, so i say cheaper and more reliable go edelbrock/ carter

I just put a brand new 4160 550cfm on my 352 added a performer intake too. Bigger cubes or higher performance I would have used a Perf RPM.

Whats the intended use of truck?

I asked about the carb because as I suspected, everyone has their preferences. The engine is a 360 with new PAW heads with all new parts, an Edelbrock performer intake, performer cam (compatable with stock valvetrain), pertronix ignition, Holley fuel pressure regulator, and headers. It has a windage tray and TRW oil pump drive and double roller timing chain and gears. The bottom end holds 60 lbs+ oil pressure.
The problem is, I want to use the truck as an occational weekend warrior on the street (nothing TOO illegal), without compromising reliability. In other words, I don't want to have to fiddle with it all the time.
It is a 65 F100 lowered with DJM and flip kit in the back. Thanks for any advice!!

I don't have much experience with carbs but I've used both Edelbrock and Holley. For me it's Holley. I use a 570 Street Avenger now. It's been great and I don't have to fiddle with it. It's much easier to tune and simply more tunable than the Edelbrock in my opinion.
