Parts to salvage off a '79 (other than the obvious)
Parts to salvage off a '79 (other than the obvious)
I just found a 79 donor for my slick, mainly for front discs/dual master cylinder etc. seeing as I wont have the space to keep it around I will probably end up plucking everything off it that would be beneficial to my 66, then end up donating the remains to a buddy who is restoring a 74. I tried searching this because I am assuming someones come up with a similar thread, but didnt have much luck, other than shoulder belts which I will probably add to the list to the mrs doesnt have to close her eyes like shes ready to meet her maker every time we hit highway speeds
Re: Parts to salvage off a '79 (other than the obvious)
If i remember right, 79 seat belts retract from the upper mount... 77 and down retract from the floor and are a better fit in a slick.

Re: Parts to salvage off a '79 (other than the obvious)
Iceman would probably be one of the guys to ask, but here are some ideas just off the top of my head. Its going to involve stripping, carefully, the wiring harness so take your time and don't rush.
Two speed wiper motor and delay module if it has one. Do not cut any of the wires on the wiper or switch.
The headlight switch should interchange.
Heater switch.
Headlight dimmer switch if its still on the floor. Don't forget the little three pronged plug.
Save your horn relay and 3-prong plug up by the core support and as much wire as you can keep intact.
Keep the starter solenoid and the two little cap style connectors with as much wire as you can save on each one. *the terminal marked "i" is a temporary 12 v. connection to the + wire to the coil and is factory spliced. Keep the entire wire from the solenoid to the coil.
Save your coil and the two cap style connectors with as much wire........*
I don't know if the late model trucks had them, but if they have an external resistor on the coil wire, keep that.
I would keep the harness that has the plugs that hook up the headlight bulbs and park lights.
There are a lot of little bullet style connectors that are unique to Ford products. Keep them with as much wire on them as you can save.
Keep the end of the tail light harness that actually hooks up to the tail lights.
If you see any little odd ball looking screws or bolts, save those. Look at the doors, the vent windows (do '79 trucks have vent windows?), door striker countersunk screws and spacers for example, the little clips that hold the door lock rods in place, the clips on the carburetor linkage, the kick down mechanism on the carb/ manifold, and the heater hose and vacuum fittings on the manifold.
Save the vent plug, brake line splitter and bracket on the rear axle.
There is a flat bar with slots on each end in the rear brakes called a spreader. Keep those and the little square looking springs that fit between the brake shoes. They make everything else as a service replacement except those two items.
Sun visors and retainer clips.
Think outside the box. These few items I've listed are unique parts and generally not available as a repair part.
If it looks odd, keep it.
Finally, when you save these things, unless its something big and obvious, put them separately in a plastic zip lock bag and label them as to what they are and where they came from. You'll thank me later.
Finally, you should do the same thing with any 61-66 truck you have the opportunity to take stuff off of.

I'm not arguing with you. I'm just explaining why I'm right.
Pardon me. Does your deaug bite?

Re: Parts to salvage off a '79 (other than the obvious)
id take anything thats good and any body parts that are rust free
most all of the electrical as Skip said is compatible with 65/66, you can use the entire harness/fusebox and get wiring 15-20 years newer if you desire.
you can sell the bodyparts and other good/unwanted parts on c/l or evilbay and get $ to use for your slick
when i part out a truck,i take everything usable even if i dont need or want it so only a rusty/trashed shell/frame and junk parts goes to the crusher.

Re: Parts to salvage off a '79 (other than the obvious)
If your truck and the donor both have 9" rears, harvest the entire rear brake system, from the backing plates out. They will bolt to your Slick's rear axle, and you will need '68-'72 half axles to make it work, but they are larger than the '66 brakes, and add another measure of braking safety.
Also:
The entire DuraSpark II harness between the distributor and the brain box.
The DSII brain box, if it has a blue tab.
Squirts bottle, if fits nice on Slick fenders.
I would harvest the ENTIRE wiring harness, as it provides a lot of good replacement wiring. The rubber firewall plug is is an excellent retrofit item if you want to add more circuits later.
Rear taillight buckets and lenses.
Headlight rings.
