Does anyone have a pic of how it's supposed to be, or suggestions for a good setup? I'm considering attaching a couple horizontal rods to the radiator supports in front of the radiator to attach the cooler. Any thoughts?

Ok, somehow I don't think that this is quite how the transmission cooler is supposed to be mounted - basically suspended between the hoses and a chain of zip ties:

The '65/'66 didn't have a radiator mounted cooler, either inside the tanks or outside like your picture.
The COM came with a funky box-like cooler mounted on the side of the transmission, with extra radiator coolant hoses running to the cooler. You do not see them often, as they had a tendency to rust out.
The kind you have usually comes with a retainer that slips through the fins of both the cooler and the radiator fins to hold it in place up against the radiator.
I am using 2 coolers for my C-6. One is the internal radiator cooler inside my '70s radiator, and the other is an aftermarket like yours.
The aftermarket one is mounted in front of the radiator, but it has brackets that run across the top and bottom. Since I intend to add a condenser for A/C, I will recess the secondary aftermarket cooler into the hood latch supports, and support it with "L" brackets.
I think it will look quite professional when I get to that point, but that is my idea for doing it.

Thanks for the skinny on that, Banjo - that makes sense. I really don't know yet how much stock stuff is left on this truck - still getting to know it. On the C6 on my '69, it leaked within the radiator section, got water into the system and corroded the guts of the C6 - so we ended up using an external one like this on it as well, but I can't remember how it mounted. Most likely as you stated with the retainer to the radiator.
I think I'll just fab up a couple rods to span the width between the radiator supports and fashion a bracket to mount this thing.

Make sure you have a air gap of atleast 2in between the cooler and the radiator. Also if you are not using the cooler in the radiator you should use a stacked fin cooler like the one below.

I used an aftermarket cooler, from Summit Racing. I had to mount it behind the radiator, so I 'upsized' it a little as per the manufacturers directions to make up for the loss of efficiency. Mine was mounted right to the radiator, it came with these-

It was an easy installation... The previous owner installed a c-6 transmission- But never hooked up the cooling lines, just looped them back... I'm glad he didn't do much driving!
