gas mileage. 63 f240 4x4.
292 w/4sp. 200 mi round trip. 55/60 on the 4lane, fairly light load and decent headwind on the way back didn't seem to make much difference. went 13mpg which is better than i would have guessed since i've read 8-10 isn't uncommon. just fyi.

It will depend on your rear end ratio and how fast you drive. I've owned a lot of 3/4 ton and larger 4x4s and found that the single biggest factor was the speed. I could get 17+ MPG at 55, but would drop below 10 at 70. The interesting thing was that it did not seem to matter how much I was carrying or towing. I could have a full load and tow another vehicle and only lose 1-2 MPG.

That MPG figure sounds pretty reasonable to me.
If you understand what you’re doing, you’re not learning anything.

forgot to mention it's got 4:56's. i'd would guess the lack of difference in mileage loaded vs unloaded is because the truck is geared low = you get what you get regardless.
13 sounds reasonable enough to me also, not quite as good as a yaris but hey it's 49yrs old (not quite as fast either).

Dad always said 13 loaded, 13 empty
I told Kid that if two guys got together and towed one of their trucks...technically they would BOTH be getting 26 MPG
honestly that the cheapest way to do a Slickstock ! Sorta like those two car Daytona drafts

hey I've got a 63 f100 2wd 223 3 speed. what kind of gas milage can i expect from it?
Re: gas mileage. 63 f240 4x4.
i think you'll need to post your rear diff ratio.stenrock96 wrote:hey I've got a 63 f100 2wd 223 3 speed. what kind of gas milage can i expect from it?
i haven't got a clue but i'll guess 16-18 until someone else chimes in.

Mine is a 63' 223, 3 speed and I average about 200-220 per tank. Around 12-13 mpg or so.

Another factor to consider when considering mileage would be tire size.sgettin wrote:forgot to mention it's got 4:56's. i'd would guess the lack of difference in mileage loaded vs unloaded is because the truck is geared low = you get what you get regardless. 13 sounds reasonable enough to me... .
A taller tire will allow the engine to operate at a lower RPM than if the truck was wearing shorter tires.
Considering you've got 4.56 differential gears and your final gear (4th) is a 1:1 ratio, then by changing tire size, for instance:
If you had 29" tall tires, your engine would turn at 3150 rpms.
If you had 32" tall tires, your engine would turn at 2870 rpms.
That is 280 rpms less....USUALLY means less fuel consumed.
