Vin tag and frame vin
I know this has been gone over before, but didn't see what I wanted. My vin tag is in the glove box. I'm still trying to locate the frame vin as the frame was POR15'd. Is that the correct spot for my vin tag? It's a 61 unibody. Vin tag and title match.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
i belive the tag in the glove box is a warranty plate and not intended to be used as Vehicle identification number... only the frame numbers are used by the department of motor vehicle.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
That is the correct location for the tag in the early Slicks.
Bill is correct about the Warranty Tag.
You really really need to find that frame VIN to make sure it matches the title. You can always buy a small can of POR 15 to cover that section of the frame back up, if you have to scrape it to find it.
Check these pictures out:

As these trucks grow in popularity, there are more and more of them showing up with mismatched titles - titles that match the VIN on the warranty tag, but do not match the VIN on the frame.
I just had a friend here in SC that scrapped what was left of 2 Slicks because they had invalid titles and didn't want to go through the hassle of getting correct ones.
He spent a lot to have one of the Slicks disassembled and sandblasted; but by the time I heard about it, they were gone.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
I found my Vin stamped on the upper right front frame rail just back from the right front tire area. Mine is a 1963 F-100
Re: Vin tag and frame vin
My 64 has BOTH under the bed and by the shock tower on the right frame rail and, of course the door tag. Kentucky claims they want to see the frame stamp, but once the I told the inspector that I had the frame stamp and the door vin, she looked at the door and never asked to see the frame stamp.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
New Mexico MVD told me that they only need to see one vin. I took a lot of time and elbow grease to find the frame vin and didnt need it.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
Interesting.....guess I'll be hunting a frame VIN tomorrow as I have someone wanting to buy it. It however does not have a door tag. Another buddy of mine said they didn't put them on there till 65. Anyone confirm this?

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
Your sixty one has the frame stamped in two places as well, in the same locations as shown, under the cab and near the shock tower.
Mine are 19" forward, and 7" back, of the passenger side cab mount on my 61 unibody. The forward one in the engine compartment is just in front, of the shock tower and is about about 5" long

Thanks a lot you have been very helpful
Re: Vin tag and frame vin
This can turn into a pain if you've got a '63-'66 Slick and someone has replaced the drivers door with a door from a '61 or '62 Slick... Now all you'll have are the one or two frame VIN locations to go by...unibodynewbie wrote: It however does not have a door tag.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
My question is this. If your titling the vehicle, and its got the correct door or glove box tag that matches the title, why would DMV even ask about another VIN? Show them the title thats signed and filled out correctly, they send it off, you get it back in a week in your name. End of story. Am I missing something?

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
I think it depends on the state you're in. If I'm not mistaken, there is a Federal law or regulation that mandates the information that is to be verified by the various DMV's in all states. Some states (or some individuals I should say) don't take the time (or know where) to look for the frame ID's. In most cases you can probably get the vehicle registered with the door or glove door tag, the the problem could come if you decided or need to move to another state or sell your truck to someone in another state where they are more diligent and check the frame #, resulting in a problem.

Re: Vin tag and frame vin
I do know that it depends on what DMV office you use as I just had an issue the other day. I'd bought a '61 uni off a guy that lived out of the area. He signed the title, filled out all the info correctly and I took it to the DMV to get put in my name. The lady in the office said that there was a problem with the sale price being 200 bucks. She said that they go by some type of "blue book" value and that their books showed this particular year of truck being worth aprox. 2500 bucks or something crazy. She said I could either pay the sales tax on their value of the truck or get a notorized bill of sale from the seller stating the actual purchase price which really was 200 bucks and pay the sales tax on that amount. I chose to go the bill of sale route. However, I decided to try a different office in another town. Walked in, plopped down the title, paid my 20 bucks or whatever it was and walked out. And get this. I'd already dated the title and I was over the grace period for no penalty. The guy gave me a form, told me what box to check, and he waived the overdue fee. Got the new title 4 days later in my name.
Re: Vin tag and frame vin
Problem is the plate is not the VIN. The VIN is stamped on the frame and the plate is officially only for warranty purposes and is specifically not a VIN plate which is why it is not secured with anything beyond push rivets. If the plate does not match the frame and anything ever happens and it gets checked you can have issues. For example, if the VIN number on the frame does not match the tag (and you registered it with the tag), and you get in a major accident where there is a complete investigation, your insurance is off the hook and you are on the hook! I will also tell you that I have had a car towed by CHP when we were doing a smog for a title transfer and I noticed that the stamped VIN did not match the tag and I called them in. Lets just say it was interesting for both the buyer who lost everything and the seller who is ended up in jail. Lots of things can go wrong and usually when you least expect it.
