Radio boxs in door panels?

Post by foodstick »

Well since my truck already had some old speakers in the doors I bought some new ones and installed them.. Here are my questions.

1. Do I need to make a small waterproof box around them to keep them dry? I would think the water would be going down the outer skin.. but wondered what you think.

2. Does the same speaker benefit sound wise from having a box behind it? or is the hollow door already make them sound good?

I might as well throw this in as well. I welded up the antenna hole, can you get the antenna type that sticks to the glass of the rear window? or is some magnet based little whip antenna better ? Maybe hidden down in the box...

I would get a set of speaker baffles. They are made of foam and fairly cheap. You may even be able to make your own. I googled speaker baffles and here is one site that came up. http://www.sonicelectronix.com/item_944 ... -4300.html
I'm no sound expert but i would think that it would help the sound quality also. Inside the doors is a large area and I think it would tend to make an echo sound. that's just my opinion though.

I second the baffles. For the price and added insurance against damage, they can't be beat. I would think the door area affecting sound would be dependent on what range the speaker covers. That's if you're even going to be particular about the sound of your radio in an already noisy Slick.

Plenty of antenna options out there too!
