66 fuse block problem + thermostat

Post by jfm »

Working on a 1966 F100 with 300 I6 and 3 speed on the column. Sticker on engine head says it is a 1977, so I am assuming that it is a 77 engine and not just a 77 head. Changed to a manual choke Carter YF carb and blocked off the smog plate that the carb sits on.

At present, I'm trying to fix some little things that have been nagging for a while. Got the wiper arms oriented correctly, Got the heater working properly but still need to replace the heater control valve. Frozen in the open position, so not so bad.

Electrical issues:
Now working on some electrical issues, specifically that the cigar lighter and the panel lights do not work. First checked the fuses, and they were okay. Then checked the fuse box itself, and the slots for these two things do not seem to be getting power. Other slots test okay but not these two. I would be grateful for suggestions as to troubleshooting.

Thermostat:
Also, since thermostats are cheap, I'm going to throw one in when I replace the heater control valve, and I was wondering what is the correct temp for this truck - 160, 180, or 195?

you will likely need to unscrew the fusebox from the firewall and look at the back to see if wires have melted/come off the tabs.

i always use 195* thermostats.

Hey, jfm

If you can, get a Motor Rad failsafe thermostat. If they fail, they fail in the open position.

I agree with Bob on that. Thats how i blew the head gasket on my 2000 Ranger. I'd opt for a 180.

Stant brand makes a "fail safe" one also. :2cents:

Uh, yeah. Had a failsafe on my 92, and it failed within one week of me putting it into my new motor. Spent the entire next three months with no heat until I could break everything open again.

Yeah, no more failsafe thermostats for me.......

better to have it fail open then to fail closed :2cents: you should have still had heat , just might take coolant a little longer to get up tp temp?

ill stick with regular thermostats @ 195*
