1964 Mercury M700 truck
1964 Mercury M700 truck
I have been a member here for about a year & have found a lot of helpful tips & info on this site as well as a couple of helpful members who helped me out with a few parts. I am just about finished my project & I thought it was about time I put up a few pics. I have always liked the shape of these model trucks & wanted something to haul my 1964 Mercury comet to nostalgia drag meets so a 1964 Mercury truck would be perfect. I have been working on it for just over a year now & am finishing it off for a historic truck run this saturday here in Sydney Australia. I bought a good original truck but it had a bit of rust in the roof so I picked up a mint cab off a wrecked truck & a friend abandoned his 1963 F700 project & gave me all his parts too, so I have used the best bits from 4 different trucks, I stripped it to bare chassis & rebuilt & painted every part here at home except the seat was retrimmed by my neighbour who is a retired motor trimmer. It is running a 361FT which will be on straight LPG (propane) with a 1964 paxton supercharger, 5 speed trans & 2 speed eaton diff which I managed to find a set of 5.1 highway gears for so it should tick along the highway at 2400 rpm at 60mph, I have also fitted an original 1964 mercury under dash air cond unit. I am hoping to put the tray on in the next couple of days eventially it will be hinged to tilt to get the car on. & the hood should go on tomorrow.

Stunning!!!!!!!
I have an extra (bent a little) 64 Aluminum grill - what you did is why it's here.
Now I know it looks as cool as I envisioned it!
Just need to find a really good TIG welder round here............

Beautiful truck. When will the Comet be loaded on it?

Thanks Greg for pointing that out. I've looked at those pics a dozen times since this morning and seem to see something new each time, but I had missed that. Nice work.Greg D wrote:Stunning!!!!!!!

Re: 1964 Mercury M700 truck
Thanks guys for the comments, I think it turned out nice. I was wondering if anyone would pickup on the grille mod, I think they should have been that way originally. Kevin the comet should be loaded up next week, we have a national drag event here in Sydney & I am racing, the track is only 20 mins away & I normally drive the comet there but I think it will be cool to haul it there on the truck. I see what appears to be an original Ford ID plate on the Paxton/ McCullough brackets. Is that an original setup?

Re: 1964 Mercury M700 truck
Hi, heres a pic of the comet, its been on the road for 22 years & gets driven everywhere & raced as well, best time is 10.88 124mph with a stroker 302 windsor.
Paul I made the brackets myself but the idler setup is original. the ford logo you see is the decal on the coil which is attached to the bracket, I am using a crane cams Hi6 ignition.

Re: 1964 Mercury M700 truck
Wow, I'm running a fresh 306 with a 90's Paxton (soon to be replaced by a Novi, hopefully), also with a Hi-6, on the Cyclone. I need your hood and carb box I tried to wedge in my 400+ inch stroker, but it's just too tight for comfort. The planned end result is quite like yours; trailer the Comet and my various trucks behind my '62 F350 tow truck.

Re: 1964 Mercury M700 truck
Paul, your cyclone sounds like a weapon with a paxton on it, have you raced it with that setup? what times have you run? I picked up the carb box on ebay, I was going to make something up but it ended up being quicker & easier to buy that, still have some mods to do before I can fit it, so I will leave the belt off until I get it all sorted. Finished the truck off friday night just in time to drive a 310 mile round trip on a historic truck run with 300 old trucks, I didn`t touch it all weekend, just topped up the fuel, happy with how it went considering I didn`t have time to drive any further than the local gas station the night before we left. didn`t have time to fit the tray so just bolted a couple of fenders on the back. heres a couple of pics from the run.
