Uni wheelbase

Post by kstones63 »

The warranty tag on Nick's 63 long bed uni says 122" wheelbase. We have moved the front Jag IFS out to 123" but the wheels still looks like they are still too far back in the wheel opening. I thought that it was the camera angle but now I am not so sure. What have other people moved the front axle forward to? If I can go another 1/2" and make it look better, it will help the engine location for the oil pan clearance.
Any thoughts?

Kevin most go at least an inch and a half you could probably go 2 inches or even 2 and a half by the looks of things . I know the Crownvic is like an incvh and a half to two inches longer than the shoprt uni .

From my viewing angle it looks like you have at least 1 to 2 " you could go forward with the front crossmember 2" should give you lots of clearance for that 5.4 :D.

It definitely looks like you could go forward a bit more but it hard to tell how much with that camera angle. A straight on shot at the center line would be helpful for those of us who aren't there with you. But you have a good eye so I'm sure you'll move it just the right amount! :D :) That's good news for your oil pan clearance! Aren't you glad you only tack welded the crossmember so far?!

The Industrial Chassis kit moves the axle centerline forward 2" from the stock location. That's 20" back from the original front spring pivot bushing hole in the frame.

I went 2 1/4" forward from the stock bumpstop holes (not sure how that relates to stock wheel center with how buggared up the stock stuff was) and with 28" tall tires there is still a very small gap at the front of the wheelwell when viewed straight on. That's with a Camaro clip, but the track width, ride height, and tire clearance is similar to the Jag. Sorry, no pics as of right now.

Since you're just working with a crossmember attached to the bottom of the frame, slide it forward with the suspension at ride height until it looks just right with appropriate-sized tires.

I think that I will move it forward another 3/4". That should put it just right. I will tack it back in and wait until we get the front fenders back on and check it again before We plate it and fully weld it in.

Honestly, I have always thought with the shape of the wheel openings nothing looks definitely centered.. I know I sure moved my uni body around on the ltd chassis a bunch before committing to it...

Lance I agree my plan is to push my body as far back on the vic chassis as I can while trying to get the tires as close to the front of the wheelwells as I can . The shape of the wheel wells just looks better with the wheels pushed to the front of them .

I like where Sparks front wheels sit :D.

We moved the front axle forward another 1/2" so we are now 1 1/2" ahead of stock. I think that it should be enough. I should curse that guy that tacked in the front cross member the first time, it was a pain to get it back out. :cussing:
I had somebody else ask me if we were going to move the rear wheels forward.
Have many others done this?

Kevin before that guy tacks it back in again just go ahead and move it forward another 1/2" all it can do is give your oil pan more clearance :D. I swear from your side profile shot you have another inch plus the 1/2 you already moved forward easy :D.

That guy didn't tack it in near as well this time so if we do need to move, we still can.

I think that we have the oil pan clearance figured out. I welded that pan up this weekend and being that my tig welding skills aren't very good, I went back to the mig and then the pan warped to where I am afraid of it not sealing up good. That pan is going in the recycle bin and a new Moroso pan was ordered today from Summitt Racing. This new pan will give us even more clearance than the original pan after I shortened it up and this way it holds 7 quarts of oil.

I am also moving the rear in mine forward 1.25". With the tires I'm using, it just fits the wheelwell better.

I will look at the back wheels when we start to put the Jag IRS in the truck. Right now the truck has 33" tires on it so there isn't any room to even consider moving them forward at this point.
