i've only had the thing for a week so small sample size but i know it ran like crap when the P.O. ran it out of gas on the test drive, went and got a can of regular gas to get it to his shop. when i picked the truck up i put premium in and it seemed to run better. that could be related to my carb and ignition bugs though.
how big is the tank on these things anyway?
appreciate all the help already. got to love forums.

Not sure if you found any help on the carb. Here is a good video that I found that may help. I also purchased his rebuild kit and my 2 bbl 2100 runs like a champ after hesitation and acceleration issues. Hope that helps.

I've got FE V-8s in both of my '65s. I like to use 15W-40 with 1 qt of LUCAS HD Oil Stabilizer. I like the fact that the LUCAS has better 'cling' qualities (to combat dry starts) than just motor oil.mac wrote:some other questions:
i plan on doing an oil change and filter, plugs and wires, and a probably a distributor cap, points, and a condensor after christmas when i have some spare change. could i run 15w40? reason i ask is rotella comes in that weight and i heard it still has zddp in it and that zddp is essential for old engines, want to know what you guys run in yours? are you guys using premium and a lead additive in your gas? i plan to.
I also run a quality, name-brand gasoline, usually mid-grade. Because I've seen first hand some of the horrors that E-10 gasoline can do to our old carbs, I also add LUCAS "Safeguard Ethanol Fuel Conditioner with Stabilizers" and the recommended dose of LUCAS Fuel Treatment. It may be overkill, but I do NOT want the E-10 to eat my aluminum carburator! I buy the additives in bulk in an effort to keep my costs down, which is way less expensive than replacing the carbs on my FEs, my lawn mower, my rototiller, my chainsaws and my power generator. So far, it's working for me!

Nice lookin truck. Dunno what the E10 laws are like in NJ, but if you have Fastracs down there they usually carry ethanol free premium grade gas. Thats what I always try to run in my trucks. And like BarnieTrk I always add lucas oil additive to my oil too. Goodluck with your carb and

I run Brad Penn 10/40 oil in all my flat tappet cam engines on the street. It has the right amount of zinc in it for the cams and lifters. The new Rotella has had the zinc levels reduced since some (most) new trucks require it for their emissions systems.
I run premium, non-ethanol gas in my '66 352 and it does run better. If I get in an area without premium I run regular unleaded with octane booster. It seems to run a bit smoother in my truck.
Welcome to the sickness.

Mac,
Look here for ethanol free gas stations. Looks like a few stations near and north of Philly:

Your experience with the truck running better on the test drive after being refueled may simply have been because the old gas had gone bad.
I use a fuel stabilizer in all my carb engines, and it does seem to slow that crappy ethanol from eating parts and becoming varnish.
