Ignition Switch Removal
Thinking my ignition switch may be bad and wanting to remove it for testing, but can't see how to remove the switch from the dash. There is no exterior nut and I do not see one on the backside. The key tumbler has a hole which I presume is to remove the key tumbler. The bezel is the standard Ford bezel.
Anyone here available to give me the trick to getting it out???

1. Disconnect battery
2. Turn key to ACC position and insert paper clip in the hole in the tumbler and then pull out tumbler.
3. Push the switch against the dash from the backside, while holding pressure against the bezel on the front side of the dash.
4. As you are pushing switch in turn it a little and it will pop out.
5. Then the bezel will fall out from the front.

after removing the tumbler,( using a paper clip or other small tool in the hole and turning the key past acc) push in on the switch from the rear while turning it
ccw. its spring loaded and theres 2 tits that fit into the besel

Another related question. I see on the chart from iceman there is a 47-0888 voltage stabilizer instr. what is the function of this part. Mostly is related to voltage to the coil?

That regulator provides the correct voltage to the gauges.

It is an oscillating, or "pulsed" voltage. Testing should show a varying voltage in the 0 to 10v range. It will affect multiple gauges at the same time if it fails, ie, temperature, fuel level, oil pressure (if equipped), will all read incorrectly.

Milo, wait a few weeks and try putting that bezel switch back in.. sometimes you SWEAR something has been changed.

It has been a few days and yesterday evening I decided to look it all over again and see if there was something that jumped out at me. Boy did it. With the key off, I have dash lights which are blinking. Now the task of removing all the tape on the wiring harness and tracing out all the wires and testing to see which one has shorted out.

Tried to get the ignition switch out this morning. Pushed the back of the switch towards the dash and held the bezel in but no joy. I could feel the switch turn about a 1/4" and I could turn it back in and feel it go into the detent as described. But it still would not fully release. I'll try again tonite when it cools off and see if it will come out.

PITA but much easier if the instrument panel is out. not required but then you can see what your doing.

Tried again this evening and the tumbler still won't come out. Are you supposed to have the key in during the tumbler removal? Do you have to remove the tumbler to remove the ignition switch?rbeck204 wrote:1. Disconnect battery

key must be in tumbler for removal
when you put the paper clip in the hole (key at ACC) you will feel a spring loaded button in the bottom of the hole push it in then turn the key a bit more past ACC and it should be released and come out.
if you have a worn key that comes out easily with the tumbler turned either way you may have to hold up on the key (pressure) to get the tumbler out together with the key

This is one of those things that is giving me fits. Feels like I am having a senior moment or something. I have tried several times and still no luv. The paper clip will go in with the key off but not when the key is in ACC position. Maybe I need to do some straightening out of the paper clip. Been rainy here yesterday and again tomorrow, so may be a couple more days before I get back to it. I'll try to keep the key up next time too.ICEMAN6166 wrote:the tumbler must be out

a very thin allen wrench works better than a paper clip as it does not bend.

A slight change of topic. I also need to unplug the wires going to the headlight switch, to see if the dash lights stay off when I reconnect the battery. I see a clip on each side of the switch like those used to hold on a distributor cap. Will releasing those clips allow the wire plug to be removed from the switch? I tried to pop them loose the same way you release them on a distributor cap but that does not seem to work. Is there a trick to getting them off, or is that not the way to get to the electrical plug to unplug the light switch?
